Spanning the magnificent Kariega Estuary on its course to meet the warm Indian Ocean, malaria-free Sibuya is South Africa’s only game reserve accessed solely by boat. After arriving at Sibuya’s reception near the river mouth in Kenton-on-Sea, guests embark on a meandering 40 minute boat cruise. Along the way, kingfishers, fish eagles, otters, antelope and other wildlife may be spotted. On arrival

at either of our camps, guests settle into their accommodation – luxury en-suite tents on raised wooden decks. With just four or eight luxury tents in each camp, our professional guides are able to offer personalised game drives, rewarding walks and exclusive boat trips. The ancient floodplains and pristine coastal forest host an abundance of wildlife: nearly 400 bird species and 45 species of game including the “Big Five”. The lush vegetation ensures a high density of wildlife and one of the best game-viewing experiences in the country. The distant roar of the ocean and the soft glow of lanterns are the only distractions as guests are served fine fireside fare in the embrace of the evening fire. The unequalled splendour of the vistas, with the Indian Ocean as their backdrop, will leave you saying “Sibuya” – we will return.

A lot of field guides list photography as one of their main hobbies and this is no surprise really as photography and guiding go perfectly hand in hand.

Photography is often a right place right time activity and being out in the bush as part of your job means this happens more often than you might think and our team frequently take advantage of time in between guests to pop out and take a few snaps.

This also means that if you are interested in photography, or just want to get some great pictures for travel memories, your dedicated field guide will know exactly where to go and how to position the vehicles to get that perfect shot.

We couldn’t resist sharing this stunning photograph by debruyn_jp (JP) of a Jackal Buzzard, a common bird of prey on the reserve that rarely sits still for a photo!

The Kariega Estuary is home to a plethora of birds. This egret is one of several found in our area but can anyone tell us exactly which one it is?

We will give you a clue… it is one of these three:
A) Little Egret
B) Great Egret
C) Western Cattle Egret

Drop your guess in the comments!

If peace and tranquillity are what you are after this Winter then look no further than our beautiful Bush Lodge.

Nestled in a secluded valley, the only sound you will hear is a trickling river and a cacophony of birds.

Worried about the cooler evenings and mornings? Don’t be, we have fire places and heated air conditioners in all rooms alongside slippers and fluffy robes. Hot water bottles and fleece blankets on gamedrives with delicious freshly ground coffee, hot chocolate or tea to take away the chill.

The heated swimming pool means the crystal clear water can be enjoyed all year round.

World Bee Day 2026

Bees are a vital part of the world as we know it and without them we would face devastating consequences when it comes to biodiversity, food production and the economy.

There are so many things we can do to support these tiny creatures and help them to thrive and multiply including planting bee-friendly flowers and plants in the garden, introducing a bee hotel and adding bee-safe water sources during the dry seasons. All of these things and more will help protect this incredible insect.

Videos by Tarene, Laine and others.

Bees are a vital part of life as we know it and, if they die out, we will see devastating consequences that will have a permanent impact on biodiversity, food production and the economy. Many things can be done to help stabilise and improve the bee population such as planting bee friendly plants and flowers in your garden, introducing a bee hotel, providing bee-safe water sources in the dry seasons and many other things. Even if it’s just opening a window to let one out of your house, every little effort helps to ensure these amazing creatures thrive and multiply!

Happy World Bee Day 2026

Bill from our APU team wrote this amazing song and created this picture to go along with it. It’s a poignant insight into what the team go through to keep our rhino safe!

This week, Nick and Mariette have been at Indaba with the newly formed Wild Eastern Cape marketing collective to show the world what a wonderful destination the Eastern Cape, and most importantly Sibuya, truly is.

This Indaba celebrates a couple of milestones for us. It is Nick’s last Indaba after 20 solid years, and it was also Jacques birthday and he popped in to celebrate!
