A look back at where it all began… 🌿
Long before it became Brinkleys River Village, this riverside property was known as the Little Brak Motel — established in 1963 as a roadside stop along the old national road, offering travellers petrol, accommodation and a place to eat, drink and gather.
At its heart was the original pub, which has evolved into Pub ’63, today recognised as the oldest pub in Mossel Bay and a lasting part of the property’s story.
Over the years, Brinkleys became more than just a place to stop. It became a meeting place for locals, travellers and entertainers — part of the social fabric of Klein Brakrivier. Among the names associated with the era is legendary South African entertainer Al Debbo (1924–2011), whose comedy, music and performances were part of South African popular culture.
These photographs offer a glimpse into those early years — the motel, the river, the pub, the people and the memories that helped shape Brinkleys.
