Meet the Knysna Seahorse

Hidden beneath the calm waters of the Knysna Estuary lives one of our most extraordinary local residents—the Knysna Seahorse.

This remarkable little creature is the world's most endangered seahorse and is naturally found in only three estuaries in South Africa, with Knysna being its most famous home. Growing to just around 12 cm, it spends its days gently swaying amongst underwater plants, perfectly camouflaged from predators.

While they're not often seen by visitors, knowing they're there is a wonderful reminder that Knysna's beauty extends far beyond its forests and ocean views.

It's these hidden treasures that make our corner of the Garden Route so special.

There is a whole other world waiting beyond the Knysna Heads.

The waters along our coastline are home to some of the Garden Route's most incredible marine life. Every trip out to sea offers the chance to encounter something different, making each adventure uniquely memorable.

Keep an eye out for some of our local residents:

🐬 Bottlenose Dolphins
Often seen surfing alongside boats and delighting visitors with their playful nature.

🦭 Cape Fur Seals
Curious, charismatic and often spotted basking on the rocks or popping up to investigate passing boats.

🐋 Southern Right Whales (Seasonal)
From winter into spring, these gentle giants return to our coastline to calve and nurse their young.

🐋 Bryde's Whales
Unlike many whale species, Bryde's whales can be seen throughout the year, making every ocean trip full of possibility.

🦋 Nature at Pearl View | The Brenton Blue Butterfly

Some of Knysna's greatest treasures are easy to miss.

The Brenton Blue Butterfly is one of South Africa's most remarkable butterflies. Once found in two locations, it is now known only from the Brenton-on-Sea area near Knysna, where years of conservation have helped protect its fragile habitat.

What makes its story even more extraordinary is that it depends on a delicate partnership with a single host plant and a specific ant species to survive. Nature reminds us that every living thing has a role to play.
