For fifteen years, Ruben the lion lived behind bars, forgotten in an abandoned zoo near the Armenian border. After years of isolation, he had stopped roaring. By the time rescuers found him, he was barely breathing, his muscles severely weakened, and his spirit seemed completely broken.
He had never known the warmth of the sun beneath his paws or the feel of grass under his feet.
Veterinarian Jan knelt beside him and gently whispered, “You’re going home, boy.”
Ruben was carefully lifted and taken on a three-day journey to a sanctuary in South Africa.
When he finally touched real ground, he stood trembling. Then, slowly, he took one step… and another.
Weeks passed.
Then, one day, his caretaker heard something coming from deep inside Ruben’s chest—a faint, broken rumble.
Ruben was trying to roar again.
It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t perfect.
But it was beautiful.
Jan cried when he heard it.
After fifteen years of silence, Ruben had found his voice again.
Sometimes, hope doesn’t arrive with a roar. Sometimes, it begins with a whisper.

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘆!?

What characteristic does this Single-striped Grass Mouse, found here in Marloth Park, share with all other rodents e.g. hares, rabbits, squirrels, guinea pigs, chinchillas and porcupines?

𝘓𝘦𝘮𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘺𝘴 𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢 and other rodents “have a pair of continuously growing, chisel-like incisor teeth at the front of both jaws, kept sharp by working against each other as the animal chews.”*

Mice are top of mind at the moment, due to the Mouse Survey conducted this week for us by Small Mammal Specialist Christia Newbery. This mouse is day-feeding so you have a good chance of seeing one. This picture was taken at Two Trees picnic site on Seekoei. We look forward to Christia’s results.
