⚠️Kruger Roads Alert⚠️ 26.08.2026

Guests are advised to avoid the R538 near KaMpgatsheni towards the turn off to Numbi Gate. Community members have blocked the road with rocks and burning tyres as service delivery protest continues. Guests are advised to use alternative roads until such time that the road has been cleared for motorist to drive on.

For those of you that have questions about Orpen Gate and the detour…this is a message that was posted on our Hoedspruit Town FB page yesterday (24/8/2026), by Christine our DA Councilor.

Dear Hoedspruit Community,
Please, I am asking everyone not to use the temporary detour yet. The Orpen road is not open and is still under construction.

The contractors have contacted me and are extremely concerned because the work is not yet complete. The G5 and stone layers have not been put down, and the culverts over the river still need to be installed.

Unfortunately, people are already using the road despite it not being ready. This could seriously damage the road and jeopardise the entire detour project.

🙏 Please, I beg you, give the contractors time to finish the work. We are asking everyone to wait until next week, when the road should be properly prepared and safe to use.

We have worked very hard to get this detour to this point. Please help us protect it so that we can have a proper temporary road for the community.

SA NATIONAL PARKS WEEK SET FOR WEEK OF 07 SEPTEMBER 2026


The 21st annual SA National Parks Week is set to take place from 7 to 13 September 2026.

This annual initiative provides South African day visitors with free access to participating national parks during the designated week.

However, for Kruger National Park, West Coast National Park and Augrabies Falls National Park free access will be from Monday 7 to Friday 11 September 2026 only and excludes the weekend.

Namaqua National Park, the Boulders Penguin Colony Section of Table Mountain National Park and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway are not included in the free access week.

This highly anticipated South African National Parks (SANParks) campaign opens the gates of participating national parks to South African day visitors at no charge, creating an opportunity for families, communities, schools, nature lovers and first-time visitors to experience some of the country’s most spectacular protected areas.

To qualify for free access, South Africans must present their identity documents whilst children below the age of 18 will not be required to provide identification. The free access does not include accommodation, guided activities, game drives or other tourist activities as these carry their normal fees.

Since its inception in 2006, SA National Parks Week has become one of SANParks’ flagship public awareness initiatives, attracting hundreds of thousands of day visitors and helping to strengthen public appreciation of South Africa’s national parks and the vital role they play in conservation. In 2025 alone, more than 105,000 visitors took advantage of the free-access initiative.

Let me introduce you to "Hond" our common duiker. He sleeps under the bushes close to the road between us and our neighbour uncle Pat.

The common duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia) relies on specialized scent glands—primarily prominent preorbital glands beneath the eyes and minor interdigital/pedal glands between the hooves—to communicate, identify individuals, and mark territory.
