Nuwefontein Wildflower Trail.
All indications are that the 2026 Namaqualand wildflowers are going to be spectacular.
In conjunction with Wide Open Spaces and Nuwefonteinskop Lodge, we are excited to launch a 4 night, three day Wildflower Trail in August and September.
The itineray will include hiking through sandveld, heuweveld and strandveld in the Kotzesrus area.
Hikes will be between 10km and 12km to optimize the photographic opportunities of the wildflowers.

Yesterday afternoon, one of these came right up to our back door as they do from time to time. They are always very quick in their approach and they leave even quicker especially if they can’t find an easy bite from the kitchen. They mainly eat insects, although their diet also consists of rats and mice, small reptiles, ground birds, eggs and fruit. In captivity, they’ve been known to kill and eat puff adders, stalking and killing them with a bite to the head.
Proudly South African, the Cape grey mongoose is indigenous to southern Africa and quite common here at Nuwefonteinskop!☀️🌾

Did you know that when driving north from Nuwefonteinskop Lodge towards Kamieskroon, you’ll find the smallest piece of foreign land registered in South Africa?
It lies right next to the road about 15km south of Kamieskroon, in an area that saw many skirmishes and is actually a hidden Anglo-Boer War memorial. The site marks the final resting place of Lt. C.J. Darter, a British officer who was killed in an ambush on the main road between Garies and Kamieskroon on the 18th March 1902.
The 32 year old sharpshooter, Lt Charles James Darter, volunteered for service with the Namaqualand Border Scouts during the Second Anglo-Boer War and arrived on the steamer Nautilus at Port Nolloth, only two months before his death. He was buried where he was killed and his grave site is the smallest piece of land belonging to Britain🥀
