The afternoon light helps make the case for itself. People linger longer, conversation moving the way a good meal does, unhurried and in no rush to arrive anywhere.

The flowers are natures reminder that spring has arrived. The bees are back on the blooms, working the way they’ve waited all winter to work, and the butterflies fill the trees, more than you’d expect at once.

The Shed, the farm’s restaurant, fills up slowly once the sun goes down. Plain-named but far from plain in what it does. A fire going and plates coming out unhurried,
and the evening running long on purpose with conversation filling whatever space it’s given.

The path up is easy going, but the walk still does its work on you…enough time to leave your thoughts behind before the waterfall ever comes into view.

The sound arrives first, a low constant noise carried down through the trees. Then the falls themselves, dropping from higher than expected, catching light where the trees open up.

Sit about it, jump in it, or stand near it. One usually notices on the way back down from the waterfall that your shoulders sit differently than they did on the way up.

September, already halfway through at FARMHOUSE58...the mornings loosened weeks ago, and the heat has settled in properly now. The bush is well into its stirring, green filling out where it was only testing before.

This is the season of things already awake.

Come sit in the warmth the valley has already found.

The Genesis of the Seed

The journey begins with the origin of life: the seed. We explore the nuances of open-pollinated vs. hybrid seeds, the secrets of a perfect germination mix, and the dedicated care required in the nursery phase. You will hand-seed your own tray of seasonal crops, which will remain in the care of our Farmhouse58 tunnels until they are ready for the earth in Spring 2.0.

Spring is near. Branches that held nothing through winter are beginning to soften, small greens returns where there was only brown…old colour finding its way in the new season.

The monkeys have already caught on. Moving through the branches with a a little more mischief, chasing the fresh growth. For them it’s something to be first to find.

The zebras keep to the hill most of the day, but evening brings them down. They come down because the grass is good and the evening is quiet, and somehow that is enough to share a meal with strangers who mean them no harm.

What began as an environmental art collaboration with Nicholas Hester has grown into something else; a working apiary, co-managed now with Walter Thornhill, our bee-keeping partner. Twenty hives stand active across the farm, each one busy with its own quiet industry.

The bees don’t distinguish between what was planted and what simply grows wild. They take from both, feeding on the natural and cultivated vegetation of the Valley in equal measure. It is fitting, in a way; art gave rise to this, and now the bees carry on the work without needing to know where the idea began.
