At the southernmost tip of Africa, where two oceans meet, lies Cape Agulhas, a coastline that draws thousands of visitors each year.

This beautiful but treacherous coastline is steeped in history, dating back to the 1500s when early Portuguese explorers named it “Cabo das Agulhas”, meaning “Cape of Needles”. These early navigators noted that magnetic north here was closely aligned with true north. They also described a coastline edged with sharp, needle-like rocks and reefs, which made sailing especially hazardous.

Now, centuries and over 150 shipwrecks later, the meaning still feels fitting, especially for those who visit this iconic landmark on a stormy day.

We love lighthouses, and when we saw this vintage photo of the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, we had to share it.

The historic lighthouse, with its 27-metre-tall limestone tower, was first lit in March 1849 and is the second-oldest working lighthouse in Southern Africa. Instead of a standard cylindrical design, it was specifically designed to resemble the legendary Pharos of Alexandria (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World). The light flashes one white flash every five seconds, with an incredible luminous intensity of 7,500,000 candelas and a nominal range of 30 nautical miles (about 56 kilometres) out to sea.
