20th July, 2018 will be...Moon Day

Every once in a while, the human race achieves something truly remarkable, and Moon Day celebrates the occasion when we first left footsteps upon our nearest neighbour.

It’s probably best to gloss quietly over how long it is since the last visitors landed there, but that’s no reason to skimp on the celebrations. After all, there’ll never be a better excuse to launch firework rockets over your neighbourhood and dress up in a tinfoil suit with a fishbowl on your head. Alternatively, you might prefer to drag a telescope out into the garden, or maybe sit in a circle howling like wolves as the moon rises.

Be careful who you invite to your Moon Day party, though, as there’s bound to be one guest who insists the party is not really happening and that you are faking the hot dogs and beer in a film studio somewhere in Nevada.

22nd July, 2018 will be...Parent's Day

Let’s face it, the most important people in many people’s lives tend to be their parents. Parents’ Day, then, is far from the horror of Parents’ Evening, and is actually a chance to say ‘thank you’, and to show how appreciative you are of the time, effort and love poured into your (assumable) successful upbringing and induction into normal society. Good work, parents.

There was one man who has been lauded for leading the charge to put an end to apartheid in South Africa, and who then went on to serve as President of South Africa for 5 years after he put an end to it. He is an inspiration to all who knew him and a hero for the ages. Mandela day recalls the life of Nelson Mandela and reminds us of the necessity for strong men and women to stand up against injustice.

History of Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela was born in Mvezo in Umata as Rolihlahla, an appropriate forename meaning “troublemaker” in Xhosa. His great-grandfather was Ngubengcuka, King of the Thembu of the Transkeian Territories. Throughout his life he fought as a revolutionary against the terrors of Apartheid, and served time in prison as a result, spending 28 years there before his release in 1990. In 1991 he began his negotiations to end apartheid, finally succeeding in putting an end to it in that year.

The rest of his life was spent working to better the lives of people in South Africa and continue to expand civil liberties within the country. He was much beloved by leaders and common people everywhere, and upon his death in 2013. Mandela Day reminds us of the life and times of this hero and the work he did in his life and encourages all of us to continue his good works in our own.

14th July, 2018 will be...Shark Awareness Day

Contrary to expectations, the purpose of Shark Awareness Day is not to stand on the beach and shout out warnings to terrified swimmers and surfers, despite the hours of innocent fun that can provide.

It’s true that sharks are impressive hunters and predators, yet the sad fact remains that these magnificent creatures are more threatened by people than we are by sharks. The worldwide demand for shark-fin soup, shark-tooth medallions, and a false sense of security on beaches everywhere, all combine to leave sharks persecuted and endangered, with millions of them being killed each year.

Like top predators in any ecosystem, sharks play an essential role in keeping the seas healthy and productive. Whilst no-one is suggesting we go out and hug a Great White on Shark Awareness Day, it’s the least we can do to respect these wonderful creatures and let them be

July, 2018 is...World Watercolor Month

Art has been an expression of the human soul, and a salve for the same, since time out of mind. One of the most ancient art forms is watercolor painting, and World Watercolor Month celebrates it and encourages everyone to give it a try!

History of World Watercolor Month

World Watercolor Month was founded by Charlie O’Shields, creator of Doodlewash®. He realized after looking at the yearly calendar that of all the forms of art that had a day or month dedicated to them, watercolor was just plain left out!

Through his efforts, July was established as World Watercolor Month once and for all! Watercolor painting has a history stretching back to pre-history, with the earliest examples gracing the cave walls where ancient man used to live. Since that time art has played an important role in our society, bringing us together, inspiring us, and lifting our hearts during our darkest days.

It has also played an important part in education, serving to help bring equality to areas and topics typically impacted by socioeconomic boundaries. How odd is it then that art classes are one of the first sacrifices when budget cuts come along for our educational institutions?

Doodlewash turned its efforts to combating this trend by partnering with The Dreaming Zebra Foundation to provide awareness to those young men and women who may otherwise not be able to develop their artistic creativity. Even better Dreaming Zebra has created a whole new type of recycling, art & music supply recycling! They gather up gently used art and music supplies and return them to people in need.
