A rare visitor stopped by for a drink of water! Did you know?

- Honey badgers are famous for their fearless nature and are often called one of the toughest animals in Africa.

- Despite their name, they don't just eat honey. Their diet includes insects, snakes, rodents, birds, and even scorpions.

- Their thick, loose skin helps protect them from predator bites and allows them to twist around and fight back if grabbed.

- Honey badgers have powerful claws that can dig burrows in minutes and uncover hidden prey underground.

- They are highly intelligent and have been observed using tools and solving problems to access food.

- Their excellent sense of smell helps them locate food beneath the soil and over long distances.

Nala Hills Wilderness I Bird Series

One of the highlights of our recent bush walk was spotting the striking White-crested Helmetshrike.

With their distinctive white crests, bright yellow eye wattles, and lively personalities, these birds are impossible to miss.

Interesting Facts About White-crested Helmetshrikes:
- They are highly social birds and are usually seen in close-knit groups that move and forage together.
- They communicate constantly with chattering, ringing, and whistling calls as they travel through their territory.
- Their bold black-and-white plumage and impressive crest give them a truly distinctive appearance.

When using a bird identification app that plays their calls, these magnificent birds often respond by calling back, singing excitedly, and sometimes even flying in to perch in nearby trees for a closer look, always a treat to experience them at Nala Hills! What a wonderful reminder of just how curious and interactive nature can be.

Meet the dazzling European Bee-eater —a true gem of the skies and one of the most colourful birds you’ll ever spot!

With its vibrant mix of golden-yellow, turquoise, chestnut, and emerald green, this bird looks like it flew right out of a painting. But it’s not just about looks—this species is fascinating in so many ways:

Interesting facts:
• European Bee-eaters are expert hunters that catch insects mid-air—especially bees and wasps!
• Before eating, they carefully remove the stinger by rubbing the insect on a branch. Clever, right?
• They are long-distance migrants, traveling thousands of kilometers between Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia
• These birds are highly social and often nest in colonies, digging tunnels into sandy banks
• Their melodious calls and graceful flight make them a joy to watch in the wild.

A powerful herd of buffalo have officially settled into their new home in the breathtaking Nala Hills Wilderness — and they’re already claiming their space, grazing across the hills and gathering at the waterholes like they’ve always belonged here.

Did you know?
• Buffalo are one of Africa’s “Big Five” and are known for their incredible strength and resilience.
• They are highly social animals, living in herds that can range from a few dozen to hundreds.
• A herd protects its own — they will stand together and even circle back to defend members from predators.
• Despite their tough reputation, they spend most of their day grazing peacefully on grasses.

The arrival of these magnificent animals marks an exciting new chapter for Nala Hills Wilderness — strengthening biodiversity and restoring the rhythm of the wild.

Spectacular Sighting at Nala Hills Wilderness!

We were treated to an incredible display of nature's raw beauty—a 4.5-meter python in the process of feeding on an impala. It's moments like these that remind us of the circle of life and the fascinating behaviors of wildlife.

Did you know?
- Pythons can consume prey much larger than their head, thanks to their flexible jaws!
- They are non-venomous constrictors, using their powerful bodies to suffocate their catch.

Exciting Sighting at Nala Hills Wilderness!

We recently came across a Mole Snake slithering through the bushveld — a fascinating and often misunderstood reptile!

Though they might look intimidating, mole snakes are non-venomous and play a vital role in the ecosystem by controlling rodent populations. They’re powerful burrowers, often taking over old mole tunnels — hence the name!
