You come back from the morning drive, still dusty from the road. Someone reaches for a towel. Someone else starts telling the story of what the guide noticed in the grass.

An elephant steps to the edge of the pool, close enough for the whole deck to go quiet. No vehicle. No chase. Just the wild arriving on its own terms.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁 🤎

A year ago, we opened our Reception & Farm Experience at Platbank, creating a different way to arrive at Mhondoro.

After a long journey, our guests can freshen up under an outdoor shower, enjoy a leisurely lunch prepared with produce harvested from our own gardens, and settle into the rhythm of the bushveld. While our guides take care of the luggage and prepare for the safari ahead, curious Angolan cattle often wander over to greet our newest arrivals, while nyalas and giraffes quietly pass by in the background.

By the time guests leave Platbank for their first game drive, something has already changed. The rush has disappeared, replaced by the feeling that they have truly arrived in Africa.

This Reed Cormorant caught a frog and spent nearly 10 minutes “marinating” it in the water before finally swallowing it whole. Nature has its own rhythm out here… and if you’re patient enough, you get to witness the most incredible behaviour unfold right in front of you.

There’s something almost unreal about a cheetah in the wild. Built for speed, yet so often still. Watching, listening, calculating. Every movement is intentional, every pause part of the hunt.

Cheetahs are the fastest land animals on earth, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h in just a few seconds. But what many don’t realise is that they can only maintain that speed for a very short time. A hunt is a delicate balance between explosive power and perfect timing and more often than not, it doesn’t end in success.

And maybe that’s what makes these sightings so special. It’s not just about the chase, it’s about witnessing the patience, the vulnerability, and the quiet determination that comes before it.
