What is your best Mhondoro memory?

The buffalo had their herd. We had ours.

And for a little while, everyone seemed perfectly happy with the arrangement.

They grazed across the Welgevonden plains while we stopped for sundowners, stretched our legs and watched the afternoon turn gold.

There is something about being in the bush together that makes the smallest moments matter more. A drink passed from one hand to another. An arm around a shoulder. The joke that gets funnier every time somebody repeats it. A family photograph you actually want to keep.

The Mhondoro Moment that lets you exhale.

While the last bit of sunlight clings to the Welgevonden sky, the hills are beginning to disappear, and high above the tree line, the nighttime story of the bush is unfolding.

This is when safari changes its pace. The dust settles, the birdsong thins, and the sounds you missed during the day begin to carry further. Nothing has ended. The next shift has simply begun.

Safari is not always about the moment that makes everyone reach for a camera. Sometimes, it is the simple privilege of sitting still while daylight leaves the reserve and the night begins to gather around you.

Some safari stories begin with what you saw in the wild.

Others begin with, “Do you remember that sunset?”

As the Welgevonden hills hold onto the last of the light, the moment needs no ceremony. Still, you cannot help but take it all in, because somehow you already know this is one you will talk about for years.

At Mhondoro, shared memories are rarely staged or planned down to the last detail. The ones that last tend to gather quietly, in the person beside you, the warmth of a jacket after sundown, the way the bush settles before nightfall, and the feeling that nowhere else is asking for your attention.

The soundtrack was not approved by Marketing. The moment absolutely was.

On the record, nobody asked Jaces to turn a buffalo encounter into his own wildlife music video.

Off the record, the hat, the grin, the shaka and a buffalo wandering through the frame are so unmistakably Jaces that changing the song would almost feel dishonest.

This is why exists. Not to smooth the personality out of the people behind the safari, but to share their timing, their humour and the moments already living in their camera rolls.

Jaces was where he so often seems to be: calm, ready and exactly where the wild decided to appear. He let the buffalo move on its own terms, kept the camera rolling and left Marketing to make peace with the soundtrack.

For many guests, the hardest part of safari is not the drive. It is choosing the right place to begin.

There are questions, especially when children are coming along. Will the journey be manageable? Will everyone feel comfortable? Will the safari feel truly wild without the planning becoming complicated?

At Mhondoro, the reassurance begins before you arrive.

Welgevonden is malaria-free and less than three hours from Johannesburg, making it an easier first step into the bush for families without losing a full day getting there.

Once you arrive, the pace softens. The welcome is warm, the small details are quietly taken care of, and the day begins to move at your family’s pace.

The children still wake before sunrise with more excitement than sleep. They learn to whisper when the guide slows the vehicle and return with dusty shoes, wide eyes and a new favourite animal.
