Makweti Makweti Safari Lodge is an experience for the discerning wildlife aficionado. Malaria-free wildernes

Timelessly African, it embodies the eras of Livingstone and Hemingway, while standing as a model of modern, environmentally sensitive taste. The Lodge caters to no more than 10 guests, with five luxury suites that blend seductively into an ideal safari landscape. This landscape is a natural home for Africa’s “Big Five” – elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion and leopard. Makweti has no fences, so th

e Big Five, zebra, wildebeest, and a host of other iconic species wander freely through the Lodge’s surrounds. Often, these wild “owners of the terrain” come for refreshment to the stream-fed waterhole just 80 yards from the open lounge and viewing deck. Beyond the waterhole, Makweti’s luxury suites and dining room command panoramic views across a gorge-defined valley, toward infinite blue hills beyond. These views, and many other enchanting vistas, extend across one of Southern Africa’s largest private game reserves – a wilderness expanse of some 40,000 hectares. For Makweti’s guests, the reserve stands open in its entirety to wonder-filled exploration. Makweti’s location is moreover malaria-free, with a temperate and invigorating climate. Your Makweti safari experiences will be complemented by the discreet elegance of your luxury suite, and by Makweti’s delectable, world-rated cuisine. Makweti Safari Lodge was founded in 1995, and its management and staff embody decades of experience in creating memorable stays for a discerning international clientele.

Who’s hiding better? 👀

Chameleons have evolved to disappear into their surroundings… but look a little closer and you might spot something else that has mastered the art of camouflage just as well. 😉

A flash of emerald, gold, and turquoise flickers in branches overhead...

The swallow-tailed bee-eater is one of the bushveld's brightest sky jewels, and a reminder to keep looking up while on safari, because beauty often arrives in the smallest detail.

A buffalo will often hold your gaze, measuring quietly. Known for their unpredictable nature, that stillness can carry as much meaning as a roar or growl, or a mere moment's pause before it returns to grazing.

Sometimes, it feels like time stands still here.

The only hint of its passing is the subtle shift of light, gold softening into bronze, and the fairy-like flurry of small creatures making their way to shelter for the night.

Some safari encounters are so surreal, they almost feel cinematic.

Calm, confident and untouchable, a solitary leopard perches on a rocky outcrop, surveying its world silently.

The Don Pedro, South Africa’s beloved dessert cocktail, is a celebration of simplicity done well. From its origins as a humble after-dinner treat to its place on tables across the country, it remains a timeless favourite.

At Makweti, a smooth indulgent Don Pedro is the perfect end to a day safari, best enjoyed surrounded by the night songs of the bushveld.

As tranquil as her surrounds, this lioness surveys her world lazily, her eyes blinking slowly closed – a sign that she is at ease.

Here, we are guests in her land.

Hyenas are some of the most intelligent predators and scavengers in the bush. They live in fascinating, complex, female-led societies where hierarchy and constant communication cues shape the clan's structure and movement.

Often misunderstood, there's more to the hyena than meets the eye.
