The arrival of SA and Pretoria’s first motor car was enthusiastically anticipated early in 1897. On 4 January the 1,5 horsepower, two-seater Benz Voiturette was displayed with great fanfare to hundreds of people at Berea Park. The motor car was imported from Germany by two Pretoria entrepreneurs, JP Hess and AE Reno. It was shipped to Port Elizabeth and transported to Pretoria by rail. The then State Secretary of the ZAR dr WJ Leyds can be seen on the photo below, enjoying his first car trip. Apparently, President Kruger kindly refused an invitation to ride in the car, humorously replying that the car would make the dogs bark and he was concerned that the car might topple over! The car boasted a top speed of 14 miles per hour. Due to insufficient road networks, it was then transported by train from Pretoria to Johannesburg for further demonstrations.
