A little sneak preview…

There are still a few finishing touches to be made. A few small details to add here and there. But our first guests simply couldn’t wait.

They asked to stay in our newly built dog-friendly Croft before we had quite finished fussing over it and so, a little earlier than planned...the doors opened.

HOW IS THAT BREATHTAKING MOON VIEW?

What followed has been rather wonderful.

The response to our new Croft has exceeded anything we expected, and bookings have filled so quickly that it is already fully booked for the next month or two.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. There is something quite special about having your own place in the mountains. Slow mornings on the veranda. Dogs at your feet. Long walks, fresh air and that familiar Verlorenkloof feeling of being far away from everything, without needing very much at all.

These are just a few sneak-preview photographs of the new Croft. We’ll share more once every last detail is in place.

The mountains, valleys, grasslands and fertile soils that surround us are part of a story far older than the Estate itself. And perhaps Heritage Day gives us an opportunity to look at them a little differently, not simply as the backdrop to where we are, but as part of what came before us.

Long before Verlorenkloof became the place we know today, this landscape was already telling a remarkable story.

Across the escarpment of Mpumalanga lie the traces of Bokoni. Settlements established from around 1500, where communities developed one of the most extensive intensive farming systems known in southern or eastern Africa at the time.

Here, people understood the land.

They built vast networks of stone terraces into hillsides to cultivate the rich volcanic soils. They created carefully planned cattle pathways, kept livestock at the heart of their settlements at night and moved them between the grasslands of the higher slopes and valleys during the day.

They grew sorghum and millet and raised cattle and produced enough to support substantial communities and to trade far beyond the escarpment.

Their produce became part of regional trading networks reaching Phalaborwa and Messina and ultimately connecting with the ancient Indian Ocean trading system.

It is an extraordinary reminder that these landscapes were never simply empty stretches of beautiful countryside. They were places of knowledge, innovation, agriculture, commerce and community.

Today, Verlorenkloof sits within this richly layered cultural landscape.

Heritage is not only found in buildings, monuments or museums sometimes it is beneath our feet.

There is a particular kind of quiet that belongs to Windydell Dam. Not silence. The water is always shifting and birdsong is always somewhere in the valley, the soft disturbance of grass underfoot and the occasional rise that catches your eye before disappearing again.
You begin to notice the surface. The changing light. The insects hovering above the water. The subtle movement that tells you a trout might be feeding just beneath.

There’s no dramatic announcement when spring arrives at Verlorenkloof. But you begin to notice it.

A little more green across the landscape. New growth along the trails. More birdsong in the mornings. Longer, warmer afternoons and the unmistakable feeling that the kloof is waking up after winter.

High in the Steenkampsberg, the Crocodile River begins its journey through a landscape where clear mountain water tumbles over rocks and pebbles, fish eagles call across the valley and wild trout still thrive.

Verlorenkloof Estate is privileged to be custodian of approximately 8km of this remarkable upper stretch of the Crocodile River, where wild rainbow and brown trout offer an exceptional fly-fishing experience.

One visiting angler, returning to the river after almost two decades, described it as meeting up with an old friend after many years. What struck him most was how little had changed. Crystal-clear water. Healthy riverbanks. Little evidence of siltation or pollution. And a river quite simply bursting with life.

Verlorenkloof has cared for its private stretch of the Crocodile River since 1999, with careful management helping to protect the quality of the water, the surrounding habitat and the wild trout that call it home.

For the fly fisherman, there is something particularly special about stepping into a river like this. Reading the riffles. Watching the current seams. Catching the flash of a fin beneath the surface. Making that first cast and waiting.
