At Thonga, you can spend the morning beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean and the afternoon beneath the canopy of an ancient dune forest. You’ll find tiny worlds hidden amongst the coral, monkeys watching from the trees, birds darting along the shoreline and a lodge tucked quietly amongst it all.

Every year, giants pass our shores. 🐋🌊

From May to November, humpback whales make their remarkable annual migration along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline; travelling north towards warmer tropical waters before making the long journey south again.

Late July and August bring the peak of the northbound passage, while October offers something particularly special: mothers beginning their southward journey with their new calves alongside them.

From the beach at Thonga, sometimes all it takes is a glance towards the horizon to catch a blow, a tail or, if you’re lucky, a spectacular breach.

Just another reminder that at Thonga, the wild is never very far away.

What makes iSimangaliso so extraordinary? 🌊🌿

The word iSimangaliso means “a miracle” or “something wondrous” in isiZulu, a fitting name for a place where so many worlds meet.

Ancient dune forests give way to wild beaches. Coral reefs lie just offshore. Freshwater lakes, wetlands and coastal forests create a mosaic of habitats supporting everything from nesting sea turtles and migrating humpback whales to hippos, crocodiles and extraordinary birdlife.

In 1999, iSimangaliso became South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its exceptional natural beauty, biodiversity and ongoing ecological processes.

And tucked within this remarkable landscape, between the dune forest and Indian Ocean, you’ll find Thonga Beach Lodge.

For us, being a luxury lodge in iSimangaliso Wetland Park means offering our guests the chance to experience this wild corner of KwaZulu-Natal while understanding just how special and significant the landscape around them really is.
