🎣 31 Years, Two Generations, One Legacy 📖

On 15 December 1995, a young Gary Shung King signed our very first guestbook, leaving us a glowing note about his "great fishing" experience.
Fast forward 31 years to 2026 and another few visits in the 90's , we had the absolute joy of welcoming Gary back to Vrederus! This time, the magic went a generation deeper. Gary returned accompanied by his son, Conner—a highly skilled and passionate young fly fisherman in his own right.
The Magic of the Dam ✨

What the incredible cyclists of the Freedom Challenge and Race to Rhodes pay in sheer physical effort, they get back tenfold with these spectacular, absolutely breathtakingly views—a vantage point that only a few people are privileged to see!
We absolutely love hosting the participants of this legendary race here at VREDERUS WILD TROUT. Providing a warm, high-altitude refuge for weary riders is always a highlight of our season.
A massive shoutout and thank you to Mike Roy, Elton, Peter (thank you for the stunning photos), and the Kruger and Rizzato families who stayed with us. You are all true legends of the mountains! 🏔️👋 CHALLENGE

The Briefing: Introduce SA’s top automotive media to the full VW Amarok 4Motion lineup on the roads less travelled.

With a heavy-hitting convoy of journalists and influencers from media outlets (like Top Gear), Ignition Channel on DSTV, News24, AutoTrader, The Citizen, and IOL, we took the bakkies off the beaten track. The 125 kW turbodiesel, the massive 3.0 V6, and the hot new 222 kW Mustang-powered 2.3L turbo all got a proper workout.

The Highlight: Pulling into VREDERUS WILD TROUT for an unbelievable farm lunch/braai🔥. When you can get a room full of motoring journalists to unanimously agree😉 on how incredible the mutton dishes and malva pudding are, you've won the day. 🍰✨That’s how great it was. An excellent stop, and a pity we couldn’t spend more time on the farm.

When the Eastern Cape sky decides to put on a show. 🌤️🌪️unbelievable contrast—vibrant green fields below and a massive, dramatic cloud formation cutting right through the blue. Nature is the ultimate artist. Life moves a little slower out here, and we are entirely okay with that. Watching the ducks glide across the water with the vast Vrederus hills in the background is the ultimate soul-recharge. 💙🍃

A Note on Conservation:
With only roughly 300 to 400 individuals left in South Africa, every successful breeding pair at VREDERUS contributes significantly to the survival of the species. The group’s interest helps highlight the importance of protecting these specific highland wetlands.

Never mind the Cape Epic. These girls were EPIC. 🚵🏻‍♂️✨🚵🏻‍♀️

2,500m+ above sea level and still smiling (mostly). Who needs a podium when you have views like this and a squad that doesn't quit? Naude’s Nek and Cape Epic, you met your match.. same grit, steeper views, and a much better support crew (us)😉.
