The fire pit at Kopano Camp has the best views, breathtaking actually, straight out over the waterhole, and that is where most evenings end up.

Four private suites, each with its own splash pool and a patio comfortable enough to lose an afternoon on. The camp's infinity pool is tucked deep into the bush, with nothing looking in, but loads to look out on. And the spa... barely a walk at all.

Stay entirely in your own company, or take the slow meander across to Lelapa Camp when you want the busier, more sociable end of things. Different days call for different answers.

Two in one year. We're still pinching ourselves.

Earlier this year, Madikwe Safari Lodge was one of only a handful of properties named a Condé Nast Traveler Triple Crown winner. Today, readers have voted us one of the Top 15 Resorts in South Africa in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards 2026.

We've put so much energy into evolving our guest experience and our camps over the last few years. To see that recognised by the people who actually stayed means more than we can say. No panel decides Readers' Choice. You do.

World Animal Day goes to the lions and the elephants. This is for the rest of the list.

A dung beetle rolling something many times its own weight, and steering by the sky to do it. The baboon nobody photographs. A jackal pair raising pups a few metres off the road. And the giraffe, which everyone sees and nobody really stops for.

Big or small, famous or not, they all belong to the same morning.

Elephants come down to water in the last weeks of the dry season, whole families of them, and the whole herd moves at the pace of the smallest one.

The Ditsele brothers came out at dusk, five in a line and in no hurry, with the light going pink behind them.

All five are Ashia’s sons. Most cheetah coalitions are two or three, so five brothers still moving together is a sighting worth stopping for.
