Dear Amakhosi family and friends,

With full hearts and deep gratitude, we share an important update about Amakhosi’s journey.

After 25 remarkable years, Amakhosi Safari Lodge will close this chapter of its story on 31 December 2025.

Despite exploring various options, we are no longer able to sustainably offer the Big Five experience within the realities of the land we currently manage, leading to very difficult decisions having had to be taken.

This decision has not been made lightly. As custodians of this beautiful wilderness for the past three decades, the owners have always prioritised responsible conservation and long-term environmental wellbeing, a commitment that remains unchanged, even in challenging times.

For all guests visiting us before year-end, operations will continue as normal. Our team remains wholeheartedly committed to delivering the warmth, care and memorable experiences that have always defined Amakhosi.

While this chapter draws to a close, the heart of Amakhosi endures. All infrastructure remains in place, and Amakhosi will continue as a private estate, with our spa in full operation, while new possibilities are explored. We are reshaping a more streamlined, diversified operation aligned with the landscape and its future.

We acknowledge the extraordinary people who have shaped Amakhosi over the years: our staff, contributors, guides, artisans, industry partners and friends. Your trust, support and belief in this place have meant more to us than words can express.

We remain deeply committed to the future and to the dedicated core team who will guide Amakhosi into its next phase. Thoughtful and responsible decisions are being made to support the people who have carried this journey with us.

To our guests, friends and long-time supporters, thank you. Thank you for the shared sunrises, fireside moments, laughter, stillness and the countless memories created along the Mkuze River. It has been an honour to care for this land and to share it with you.

As we move forward, our commitment to this place, its people and its conservation legacy remains unwavering. While this is a pause and a transition, we have not lost hope. This next chapter holds possibility, and in time, new opportunities and stories may yet emerge.

With sincere thanks,
Sonja

We’re used to hearing how small the world has become, but under the sky in Zululand, away from it all, the world starts to feel vast again.
It's an amazing feeling. It's exciting. At Amakhosi, we feel this every day.

Is the colour of Christmas green or red?
At Amakhosi, the answer is simple. Zululand shows it to us every December.

Butterflies and moths are very closely related, and they aren’t always as easy to tell apart as we tend to think. One of the biggest clues is the time of day you find them. If you spot one in the middle of the day, it’s almost certainly a butterfly, but even that rule has a few exceptions.

Regardless of when you see them, both can be incredibly beautiful and here at Amakhosi, we find some of the most extravagant!

Even though we love to think of the scrub hare as Southern Africa’s Easter Bunny, they’re actually most active around Christmas.
Their breeding season is starting, so this is one of the best times of year to spot them. We should be getting plenty more sightings here at Amakhosi as the year draws to a close.

Brown hyenas are shy and elusive, moving through their scattered Southern African habitats before anyone even realises they’ve passed. Amakhosi is one of the rare places you might find one, but when we do spot them, they only give us a moment before disappearing into the bush again.
