Every now and then, a very special visitor can be spotted off the coast of Machangulo: The Dugong.

Often called the “sea cow”, the dugong is a marine mammal that feeds almost entirely on seagrass. They can grow to around 3 metres long and weigh up to 500 kg.

Dugongs are classified as Vulnerable to extinction globally, making every sighting a special reminder of the incredible marine life found along the Mozambican coast. Healthy seagrass meadows are essential to their survival, providing the food and habitat they depend on.

So if you are lucky enough to spot one, take a moment to appreciate one of the ocean’s most unique residents.
