The Pied Kingfisher is one of the birds you can often spot along the Crocodile River at River House.
With its distinctive black-and-white plumage and long, sharp bill, it’s perfectly adapted to life around the water. Look up and you may catch one hovering almost motionless above the river, watching for fish before suddenly plunging into the water to make its catch.
They’re fascinating birds to watch, and with the Crocodile River just beyond the lodge, you don’t always have to go far to enjoy a little birding.

Or simply take a little longer to enjoy the morning beside the Crocodile River. There’s a special view from the pool at River House as the sun begins to set.

Meet Khosi. She wears more than one hat at River House Lodge. As part of our housekeeping team and an assistant chef, she helps look after the little details that make a stay feel special.

From preparing rooms for our guests to helping in the kitchen, her work is an important part of the everyday rhythm of the lodge.

We’re grateful for the care, hard work and warmth Khosi brings to the River House team.

World Elephant Day 🐘

Some of the most memorable moments at River House begin with a quiet look towards the riverbank.

Elephants are part of the rhythm of the Lowveld, moving through the bush and along the Crocodile River as they have for generations. Being able to witness them from the lodge is a reminder of just how connected River House is to the landscape around us.

Today, we celebrate these incredible animals and the wild spaces they call home.
