This striking Golden-tailed Woodpecker isn't just pecking at a tree—it could be searching for insects hidden beneath the bark or chiselling out a nest cavity. Thanks to a shock-absorbing skull and a tongue that can wrap around the back of its head, it can hammer thousands of times a day without getting a headache!

Did you know?

This little bird is a Crested Francolin, and despite spending most of its life on the ground, it's a surprisingly capable flier. Instead of taking off gradually, it explodes into the air with a loud burst of wingbeats when startled—often giving unsuspecting safari-goers quite a fright!

They also sleep in trees at night to stay safe from predators, only returning to the ground at first light to forage for seeds, insects, bulbs and berries.

Have you ever had a francolin suddenly burst out from the roadside? It certainly gets the heart racing! 😄
