Did you know hippos spend most of the day out of the water, not just in it? 🦛

They often rest on sandbanks like this to regulate body temperature. Their skin produces a natural red fluid that acts like sunscreen and helps protect them from drying out. By late afternoon, they head back to the water and then graze for hours at night.

This week, we celebrate an extraordinary milestone…

On 31 May 2026, the legendary Kruger National Park turns 100 years old.

For a century, Kruger has been a sanctuary of wilderness, a place where lions still roar beneath African stars, elephants carve ancient pathways through the bush, and every sunrise carries the promise of something unforgettable.

From its humble beginnings in 1926 to becoming one of the world’s greatest wildlife destinations, Kruger’s story is one of vision, conservation, resilience, and wild beauty.
At Needles Lodge, we are privileged to live on its doorstep and witness its magic every single day.

Join us in celebrating 100 years of one of Africa’s greatest treasures. 🐘🦁🌿

Did you know some squirrels in Kruger build more than one nest at a time? 🐿️

A mother often keeps two or three leafy nests in different trees. If parasites build up or a predator gets too close, she simply moves the babies to a clean, safer nest. The young grow up in these hidden tree homes until they are strong enough to leap and climb on their own.

Quiet planning, high up in the branches.

Looks like we interrupted a very private moment in the bush 😄 These giant grasshoppers were mating while clinging to the same branch, completely unfazed by everything around them.

Did you know? Female grasshoppers can lay dozens of eggs at a time, burying them in the soil where they stay protected until the right conditions arrive for hatching.
