*πΈ FROGS & TOADS: SMALL YET AMAZING! πΈ*
_Free Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary, Sodwana Bay_
Donβt let their size fool you β frogs and toads are ecosystem superheroes π
*WHY THEY MATTER*
Frogs and toads are important indicators of a healthy environment. They:
- *Control insects naturally* β natureβs pest control!
- *Feed the food web* β food for birds, snakes and mammals
- *Recycle nutrients* in wetlands
- *Tell us if nature is healthy* β if frogs disappear, itβs a warning sign
*FROGS & TOADS OF SA*
South Africa is home to so many amazing species β from tiny reed frogs to the big, lovable Giant Bullfrog.
*WHERE DO THEY LIVE?*
In ponds, streams, wetlands, and even your garden! Some live in water, some on land, some in both. They all need clean water and natural habitat to breed.
*6 FUN FROG FACTS*
1. *Chameleons of the pond* β Some frogs can change colour to blend in and hide
2. *Egg machines* β Many frogs lay thousands of eggs at once!
3. *Double breathing* β Tadpoles breathe with gills. Adult frogs breathe with lungs _and_ through their skin
4. *Jump machines* β Powerful back legs for jumping and swimming
5. *No drinking needed* β They donβt drink water, they absorb it through their skin
6. *Night singers* β Most are active at night or in the rain. And yes, they have excellent hearing!
*HOW YOU CAN HELP* πΏ
- Provide shallow water dishes or ponds
- Keep your garden natural and pesticide-free
- Plant indigenous vegetation
- Leave leaf litter and moist areas for hiding
*PLEASE DON'T*
Use pesticides, remove all leaf litter, disturb eggs/tadpoles, release pet frogs, or pick them up unnecessarily. Enjoy them β but leave them be!
*FROG LIFE CYCLE:* Eggs β Tadpole β Tadpole with legs β Young Frog β Adult Frog
*Healthy wetlands. Healthy wildlife. Healthy future.*
