There is nothing quite like an epic Kruger trip!
Last month we spent a week exploring the northern Kruger National Park. On our very first morning in the Pafuri area, we caught a brief glimpse of a Stierling's Wren-Warbler. The sighting was over almost as quickly as it began, leaving no chance for a photograph.
A few days later, we spent the day birding around Nthakeni Bush & River Camp, where we were staying. One of the things I love most about Nthakeni is that you can bird on foot, giving you the opportunity to slow down and really immerse yourself in the bush.
Before the trip, I had learnt the Stierling's Wren-Warbler's distinctive cricket-like call using the Firefinch Kruger app. As I walked around the camp, I suddenly heard that familiar sound. After a patient wait, the bird popped up just a few metres away.
The branches may not be perfect, but for a species that can be incredibly difficult to photograph, I'll happily take this shot!
If you're looking for an outstanding birding base in the northern Kruger, I can highly recommend Nthakeni Bush & River Camp.
