The story of the Laird’s Arms

The Laird's Arms Pub takes its name from James Douglas Logan, the Scotsman who founded Matjiesfontein in 1884.

Logan was originally a railway man, and he transformed the tiny railway settlement into a fashionable Victorian health resort. He became known locally as “The Laird of Matjiesfontein” — laird being a Scottish term for a landed gentleman or proprietor.

That nickname is believed to have inspired the name Laird’s Arms for the village pub.
