World Lion Day: Don’t cuddle that cub !
On World Lion Day, the NSPCA would again like to appeal to the public not to get involved in cub petting. Lions cubs are taken away from the mother within a few days of birth for hand rearing by paying volunteers who are led to believe that they are rearing ‘orphaned ‘ cubs for release back into the wild. When the cubs become too big for petting and ‘selfies’, they are moved on to be hunted; or for slaughter for lion bone. Contrary to claims by the captive lion industry, this does not contribute to conservation and these lion are not released to the wild. Wild lion are limited by habitat availability and predator specialists have shown that relocating wild lion is the most effective way of re-establishing lion populations when needed. Captive bred and hand reared lion not only have questionable genetics but humanised \ tamed lion pose can become potentially dangerous and problematic.
Don’t cuddle that cub and remember ‘selfies’ are selfish and cruel!
