WTM 2011: SA marketing efforts slip by British travellers
And I am not surprised - South Africa's appearance on World Travel Market was a total joke. South Africa was presented by just over 50 exhibitors, of which all provinces, some museums i.e. The Apartheid Museum and a couple of Nature Reserves. 41 exhibitors from the private sector showcased our country. Compare this to Kenya who arrived with almost 80 exhibitors from the private sector, Ethiopia with almost 40 from the private sector, Tanzania with more then 100 exhibitors from the private sector, Uganda 30, Botswana 23 etc. Seeing the latest statistics of a 49% drop in intercontinental and international arrivals as published by SAT - South Africa, SAT, and the Ministry of Tourism should put every effort in to market this country - yet nothing is done. It does not help very much if we still bath ourselves in the "glamour" of a World Cup and arrive with an attitude we are the best on the continent - when the arrival numbers clearly say something else. Everywhere else on the continent the tourist numbers are rising - here they are dropping. And what I just saw in London is the clear indication. The show starts at 10 - so it makes no sense that "our" provincial representatives only rock up at 11 and the stand is empty; and that no effort is made to actively push and market our destination. In the press center press releases could be found from EVERY African destination except South Africa; Uganda, Malawi, Burundi, the DRC (!) had cocktail parties and their Minister mingled with exhibitors and trade visitors during the day - and what did SA say??????

A group of Midrand-based corporates and specialists have joined forces in a bid to increase tourism and other economic activity in the area.

The newly established Midrand Forum was spearheaded by Director of Fight Against Crime Al Kararki, and stakeholders include Midrand Tourism, Gallagher Convention Centre, the Gautrain, Grand Central Airport and the Tintswalo Group, amongst others.

Karaki said Midrand needed a brand and an identity so that everybody could assist in marketing it as a meeting, business and lifestyle destination. “We hope that this will be the spark that gets people and business in Midrand going and we want to show people that this is actually happening through our Midrand Business Directories, events and awareness campaigns.”

“We found that everyone needs something, so by networking we can more than likely find what we need right here in Midrand. The first step is to align all of the like-minded people in Midrand together in sectoral networks such as business, security, tourism, environment and non-profit.”

Events planned for the area include a marathon through Midrand and the surrounding townships, jazz at the Midrand Lake and a mardi gras event in the CBD.

Grand Central Airport based in Midrand, are applying for International Status, for light planes to fly in from other african countries. This will strengthen the position for Midrand as a key business hub and should improve the focus in expenditure planning and infrastructure of our roads and services, much needed at this point.
