Morukuru Family is situated in a private concession within the malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve. This allows us the opportunity to offer our guests the Morukuru Freedom Concept as we like to call it. Our guests are able to spend their days under our African skies as they wish. Guests are able to go on game drives as many times as they would like to, fishing, walks, pizza picnics, bush breakfasts, ch*****ne parties under the stars....etc
Our activities cater for the young and old and are enjoyed in our private concession as well as within the rest of the Madikwe Game Reserve. Guests are accommodated in one of our three safari houses, Morukuru River House, Morukuru Owner’s House and Morukuru Farm House, each of them being offered on an exclusive-use basis. Each house includes their very own game drive vehicle, own personal staff, private game ranger & tracker, babysitting service, personal chef, private plunge pool and most of all complete freedom…… No sharing with other guests. We do however offer babysitting services, should parents prefer to go out into the bush by themselves. Morukuru Family, is a family and looks after families….. Our entire team is highly qualified to entertain and take care of all ages and have been trained to be 100% flexible on VIP level. Morukuru Family Madikwe is a member of Relais & Châteaux, an association of 580 unique hotels and restaurants throughout the world.

This International Chefs Day, celebrated on 20 October, we’re honouring four members of the Morukuru Family culinary team at Madikwe Game Reserve and De Hoop Nature Reserve: Head Chef Asion Mathebula and Chef Geoffrey Magakwe at Morukuru Family Madikwe, and Pastry Chef Elisabeth Mokgadi and Trainee Chef Bianca Newman at Morukuru Family De Hoop. Their journeys differ, but each is shaped by the people who inspired them and a belief that good food and knowledge should always be shared.

Today, they’re the ones leading kitchens, encouraging new talent, and inviting guests to look more closely at what’s on their plates. This International Chefs Day, we celebrate every chef who shares not only food, but also the knowledge and stories that allow others to grow. Perhaps that is the most important ingredient of all: something generously passed from one pair of hands to the next.

A guided bush walk slows the landscape down, revealing tracks pressed into the earth and calls that would otherwise disappear into the background. Your guide may point out the signs of an elephant before you see one or turn your attention skyward as a Verreaux’s eagle-owl watches quietly from the branches.

Step into the bush alongside your guide. You'll learn to notice more, listen carefully and understand how every part of the bush is intricately connected.

Imagine falling asleep above an active waterhole, with nothing between you and the sounds of the Madikwe Game Reserve night.

No Wi-Fi or television. No artificial light. Just an elevated hide, a beautifully made bed, your favourite person beside you, and the occasional footsteps of elephants and antelope arriving at the water below.

Then morning comes, and you open your eyes already inside the view.

Rather than simply a night in the bush, an overnight stay in the Morukuru Family Madikwe hide is a night entirely surrendered to it.

Beyond its famous wildlife, Madikwe Game Reserve is home to remarkable trees that feed, shelter, and shape life in the bush. Meet Morukuru Family Madikwe’s own “Big Five”, in our blog. Because a game drive changes once you begin to recognise the trees in the reserve.

A marula becomes a place to look for elephants. The bare branches of a leadwood invite you to scan for vultures.

A flowering cork bush brings the possibility of sunbirds, while a Tamboti reveals one of the stories at the very heart of Morukuru Family.

Meet five remarkable trees in Madikwe Game Reserve, from fruit-bearing marulas to the Tamboti tree that gave Morukuru Family its name.

What makes Morukuru Family Madikwe so special?

For Managing Director Armand, it's the feeling of belonging. Madikwe Game Reserve had always been on his list of reserves to work in, and after becoming part of Morukuru Family, he could no longer imagine being anywhere else. “The name says it all. We are one big family.”

Dean, our Operations Manager, Morukuru Farm House Manager, and Guide, sees that same feeling reflected in the guests - when they settle in, help themselves at the bar and splash in the pool, something shifts. Shoulders drop, conversations deepen and laughter stretches late into the day.

That is the magic of Morukuru Family. You arrive as a guest, make yourself completely at home and leave feeling part of something.

Spring and summer bring a change of cast to the Madikwe Game Reserve bush – and some of its smallest residents put on the biggest performances.

The lilac-breasted roller tumbles through the air in dramatic rolling displays. The tiny pearl-spotted owlet watches the world with one pair of eyes while a second, false pair guards the back of its head. And the southern yellow-billed hornbill prepares for one of the bush’s most remarkable nesting rituals.

In this reserve, especially from October - April, looking up is almost always rewarded.

Which one of these feathered beauties would you be most excited to spot?

The days are warming up... and everyone who has been a guest at Morukuru Family Madikwe knows that nothing beats sundowner hour in October.

A cold drink in hand as the bush goes quiet. That last spill of orange across the Madikwe Game Reserve sky. Not a care in the world.

This is living.

Rosemary moves between our Madikwe Game Reserve houses as Relief Manager, but wherever she goes, her instinct remains the same: notice the person in front of you.

Remember what makes them smile and pay attention to what they need. Take care of the little things before they ever need to ask.

For Rosemary, exceptional hospitality always starts with making someone feel seen and cared for.

Fresh fruit and local flavours with something cold (or warm) to sip. Most importantly, nowhere else you need to be.

At Morukuru Family Madikwe, shared meals often unfold around a beautifully laid table, surrounded by birdsong, fresh bush air and the people you came all this way to reconnect with.

As proud members of Relais & Châteaux , we believe a true taste of a place is about more than what is served. It is where you are, who you are with and having the freedom to linger over that last bite.
