⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE
Severe weather continues, with the rest of the country also facing possible rainfall but guaranteed cold as the cold frontal system begins moving out of the country tomorrow. South Africa faces persistent, disruptive conditions as heavy rainfall threatens high-level flooding, road closures, and mudslides across the Eastern Cape and Western Cape, while a cold advisory brings plunging temperatures, windy conditions, and light snowfall to the high-lying areas of the Northern Cape and Eastern Cape. Most northern provinces remain partly cloudy to cool, while the central and southern interior face intense, cold, and wet conditions. Strong coastal winds and damaging waves are creating perilous navigation conditions along the southern coastline.
Freezing temperatures, heavy rain, and lashing winds will severely impact daily life, so everyone must take immediate precautions. For farmers, the bitter cold and icy snowfall threaten vulnerable livestock and crops, requiring secure indoor shelter and extra feed to prevent loss. Logistics and transport companies must prepare for major supply chain disruptions as flooded roads, submerged bridges, and mudslides block key shipping routes and create treacherous driving conditions. Travelers, tourists, and commuters should avoid non-essential road trips, watch out for fast-moving rivers that can easily sweep vehicles away, and expect sudden cancellations of outdoor tours or flights. Mariners and small vessel operators face dangerous, high-risk sea navigation with waves that can swamp boats, meaning all small watercraft should remain safely in port. For families and people with pets, domestic animals must be brought inside or kept in warm, dry enclosures away from the biting wind to prevent hypothermia.
For the rest of the week, dress in heavy, wind-resistant layers, thick sweaters, waterproof jackets, beanies, and gloves to combat the extreme chill. Because electricity networks often experience strain or outages during severe storms, many households will rely on alternative heating. Never leave open fires, paraffin stoves, gas heaters, or candles unattended, and ensure charcoal braziers are used only in well-ventilated spaces to avoid deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.
