An expanse of endless indigenous bush, plateau grassland, rocks and ridges, it is quite unlike any place on earth. Here, wild, untamed savanna give way to perennial streams, bountiful dams and deep, mountainous kloofs. It is against this striking landscape, that once-in-a-lifetime bush experiences unfold. Mangweni houses two impressive safari lodges and two spacious bush villas, as well as wedding and conferencing facilities. stocked dams with Bass, Telapi, Carp and Yellow Fish makes for excellent fishing. Mangweni Private Game Reserve is self drive reserve; however we do not allow private vehicles to be
used on the reserve. Game viewing vehicles are available for hire. Guided game drives are also available on request.

🌳 Masters of hiding: Their grey-brown coat gives them fantastic camouflage in the bushveld. 👀
👤 Mostly solitary: They are usually seen alone or in pairs rather than large herds. 💕
🍃 Great little browsers: They enjoy leaves, shoots, flowers, fruit and other vegetation. 🍎🌱
🐸 Not always vegetarian! They sometimes eat insects, frogs, birds and even small animals or carrion. 😲
🦌 Both sexes can have horns: Males and females may have short, pointed horns, although the male’s are usually more noticeable. 📌

🏃 Quick escape artists: When threatened, they can move rapidly and disappear into dense vegetation or a nearby hiding place.

🦉 Important prey: They form part of the food chain and provide food for owls, snakes, mongooses and other small predators.
🪺 Good shelter builders: They use grass, leaves and other vegetation to create nests and sheltered resting places.

🐗 Those “warts” aren’t really warts! The lumps on a warthog’s face are thickened areas of skin that help protect it during fights.
🦷 Impressive tusks: Warthogs have two pairs of tusks. The upper tusks can grow into impressive curved weapons.
🏃 Fast runners: Despite their stocky appearance, warthogs can run at speeds of around 50 km/h for short distances.
🕳️ They move into burrows backwards: When entering a burrow, a warthog often backs in, leaving its tusks facing the entrance as protection.
🌱 Mostly grazers: Warthogs spend much of their time feeding on grass, roots and other vegetation.
🧎 They kneel to eat: Their front legs have tough, padded areas that allow them to kneel comfortably while grazing.
👨‍👩‍👧 Family groups: Females and young usually live together in small family groups, while adult males are often more solitary.
💦 Water lovers: Warthogs need regular access to water and enjoy wallowing in mud to help cool themselves and protect their skin.
🦁 Important prey: Young warthogs can be hunted by predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas.
🌅 Active during the day: Warthogs are mainly diurnal, making them a familiar sight on African game drives.
🐾 Their tails have a purpose: When running, warthogs often hold their tails upright, making it easier for family members to follow them through tall grass.

💩 Dung is their food: Dung beetles feed on animal dung, particularly that of herbivores.
🏋️ Incredibly strong: Some dung beetles can move dung balls many times their own body weight.
🌍 Nature's recyclers: By burying dung, they return valuable nutrients to the soil and improve soil health.
🌱 Help plants grow: Their activity improves soil structure and can help seeds become established.
🪺 Dung is also a nursery: Females place dung underground, where their larvae feed and develop.
🧭 They navigate by the sky: Some species use the Sun, Moon and even the Milky Way to keep a straight course when rolling dung.
🦁 Important in the bushveld: Dung beetles are especially valuable in areas with wild animals because large amounts of dung are produced by elephants, buffalo, rhino and antelope.
🐘 They follow big animals: Some species quickly locate fresh dung and can arrive soon after a large animal has passed.
⚽ Not all roll balls: While ball-rolling species are famous, other dung beetles bury dung directly beneath the dung pile.
♻️ They reduce waste: By rapidly removing and burying dung, they help recycle organic material and reduce breeding opportunities for some dung-associated pests.

KNOW YOUR BIRDS 🪶

💙 Beautiful colouring: Its body is mainly blue-grey with a warm reddish-orange bill and subtle red markings.
🌾 Seed lover: It feeds mainly on grass seeds, but also takes small insects, especially when feeding young.
👨‍👩‍👧 Very social: Blue Waxbills are often seen in pairs or small flocks.
🪺 Clever nesting: They build small, rounded nests from grass and plant material, often in shrubs or dense vegetation.
🎵 Soft calls: Their calls are gentle and high-pitched rather than loud and harsh.
☀️ Active during the day: They spend much of the daylight hours searching the ground and vegetation for food.
🇿🇦 Limpopo resident: They are well suited to the warm bushveld environment and can be found in parts of Limpopo, including the Waterberg/Mookgophong area.
