Road-testing a possible new life in South Africa! ✈️🌍

It was such a delight to host Sara Lozise Fuery and her travel companion at Villa Palmera as they explored whether South Africa might become their next chapter.

Coming from the Emerald Isle of Ireland, Sara couldn’t quite believe the blue skies — and especially the fact that there were no clouds! 😂☀️

Even better, she discovered that the little succulents she carefully nurtures at home can simply be growing happily in the garden here! 🌵🌿

As an expat who has made South Africa home, I love being able to share not just the beautiful places, but some of the realities, opportunities and lifestyle differences that come with making the move.

Perhaps this was more than just a holiday… maybe it was a little road test for a new life in South Africa. 🇿🇦

Thoughts on Tourism Day! My travels have taken me From Cairo to Cape Town, China to Cambodia, travel has been such a big part of my life for the past 30 years.

But now owning a guesthouse - Villa Palmera, I have the joy of welcoming guests from around the world and sharing a little of what makes this corner of the Garden Route so special — its people, landscapes, wildlife, ocean, adventure, history and incredible stories.

Perhaps that’s what I love most about tourism: it connects us. It opens doors, creates understanding, supports communities and reminds us that there is always another story to discover. Today welcomed a family who visited before co-vid and now here to celebrate their daughters 5th birthday and later tonight a Chinese tourist overnighting - So why not Come visit soon!

Sometimes it’s a landing pad before the next adventure.
Sometimes it’s where you recover, reconnect, network — or simply have a really good conversation.

Over the past few months, guests have arrived with very different stories…

A guest who left inspired to create a boarding route — and perhaps even an annual festival.

A first-ever whale sighting. 🐋

And Emily, inspired by the work happening here, is coming back next year to help at Villa Palmera and begin her journey towards becoming a marine guide.

Creature Feature: The Marvelous Mussel

Living in Mossel Bay, I’ve always loved that our town is named after one of the ocean’s hardest-working little creatures. The humble Brown Mussel (Perna perna) may not be as glamorous as whales or dolphins, but it has helped shape both our coastline and our history.

For tens of thousands of years, early humans living along South Africa’s southern Cape harvested shellfish from these rocky shores. Rich in protein, iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, mussels formed part of a nutritious coastal diet. Many scientists believe that access to these reliable marine food sources contributed to the remarkable development of modern humans right here in what is now celebrated as the Home of Humanity.

Today, these remarkable molluscs continue to work quietly beneath the waves. A single mussel filters litres of seawater every day, removing tiny particles and helping to keep our oceans healthy. When thousands grow together, they create living reefs that provide shelter for countless marine species and help protect our shoreline from the force of the sea.

Yet life for a mussel is anything but easy. Every day they endure pounding waves, scorching sunshine at low tide and hungry predators. Climate change is making their world even tougher, with rising sea temperatures, stronger storms and changing ocean conditions placing increasing pressure on these resilient ecosystem engineers.

Their story reminds us that even the smallest creatures can have an enormous impact.

One of the best ways we can celebrate our marine heritage is by supporting responsibly harvested local seafood. Sustainably farmed mussels are one of the ocean’s most environmentally friendly sources of protein, requiring no feed, no freshwater and leaving a relatively small environmental footprint.

If you’re visiting Mossel Bay, treat yourself to a delicious local mussel dish at Gannet Seafood Restaurant.

Saturday on St. Blaize trail. With gentle temperatures of around 21°C and hardly a breath of wind, it was the perfect day to stretch our legs and enjoy a coastal walk. There is something wonderfully restorative about following the path above the ocean, breathing in the fresh sea air, listening to the waves below, and taking time to appreciate the beauty on our doorstep.

Of course, every great walk deserves a good coffee stop bagels in Marsh Street before heading home up the mosaic steps back to Linkside.
