On World Oceans Day, we are reminded that every river has a story that ultimately leads to the sea. At River Lodge, nestled along the banks of the beautiful Bushmans River, the connection between freshwater and ocean ecosystems is evident every day. The health of our rivers directly influences the health of our oceans, carrying nutrients, sustaining wildlife, and supporting countless species along the way.

The Bushmans River provides a vital habitat for fish, birds, insects, and mammals, while its wetlands help filter water naturally before it continues its journey towards the Indian Ocean. Protecting these waterways is an important part of conserving the broader marine environment. What happens upstream has a lasting impact downstream.

Guests enjoying a boat cruise, riverside safari, or peaceful moments overlooking the water are witnessing one of nature’s most important connections. The river is more than a scenic feature; it is part of a living network that links the landscapes of the Eastern Cape to the ocean beyond.

This World Oceans Day, we celebrate not only the oceans but also the rivers, wetlands, and estuaries that help keep them healthy. By protecting these interconnected ecosystems, we contribute to a future where both wildlife and people can thrive.

"He wears no crown, yet rules a kingdom. He claims no throne, yet commands respect. Such is the timeless majesty of the lion."🦁👑

Our dominant male lion with the eastern cape landscape in the background. A male lion's mane is one of his most distinctive features and can range from blond to black. Stronger, older males often develope darker manes.

"From the moment we arrived, everything was perfect. The staff simply couldn’t do enough for us; every detail thoughtfully taken care of, and their warmth made us feel completely at home. The food was delicious as was the incredible South African wine.

The game drives were amazing. You get to see such an abundance of wildlife. Inquisitive giraffes around every corner, lazy honking hippos, rhinos, zebras and so many antelope species (it’s impossible to remember them all) as well as unforgettable sightings of cheetahs, lions and so many elephants up close.
The standout moments for us have to be witnessing a female lion with her adolescent cubs make a successful warthog kill right in front of us which was both raw and unforgettable, and spending time with Thandi and Twinks was simply wonderful.

What truly sets Kariega apart is the incredible conservation work you are doing. Knowing that our stay plays even just a very small part in supporting and protecting this work made the experience even more meaningful.

This was our second visit to Ukhozi and we fell in love all over again. I don’t even need to convince my husband that we should return again, you’ve already done that for me."

Hippo calves stay very close to their mothers for protection, especially during their first year of life. A calf learns important survival skills, such as where to graze and how to navigate waterways. How awesome is this sighting of mum and her calf out the water. Not very common to see🦛

After a few challenging dry years, today’s rain has been welcomed with open arms across the reserve. The sight of rain falling brings hope for the months ahead.

Good rainfall is the lifeblood of the bush. It replenishes water sources, nourishes the soil, and encourages fresh growth across the veld. The vegetation responds quickly, with grasses, shrubs, and trees receiving the moisture they need to thrive. This renewed growth provides essential food and shelter for a wide variety of wildlife, supporting healthy ecosystems throughout the reserve.

For the animals, the benefits are equally significant. Improved grazing conditions help herbivores maintain good condition, while fuller waterholes and rivers provide reliable access to fresh water. As the landscape recovers and flourishes, the entire food chain benefits.

There is something special about the smell of rain in the bush and the transformation it brings. Today’s rainfall is a reminder of nature’s resilience and the importance of every drop. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this rain will have on both the vegetation and wildlife that call it home.

A relaxed black-backed jackal relaxing while observing his surroundings. They are omnivores, feeding on invertebrates, rodents, hares and young antelope. They also feed on carrion, birds, birds eggs and snakes.

What do you think this jackal is looking around for?
