A pleasant surprise awaits you en route from Johannesburg to The Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga. Somewhere, in the middle of nowhere, halfway between Machadodorp and Nelspruit, is a small and intimate vegan oasis – Old Joe’s Kaia Country Haven and Guesthouse. Here the peace and tranquillity of an old world reins, where the forest awakens to birdsong in the early morning hours of a dream world. N

othing matters other than the guests’ freedom to enjoy what is on offer – numerous meanders through the garden, a meditation in the 7-circuit Classical Labyrinth, time spent in contemplation while lighting a fire in the Olive Room, observing the organic vegetable gardens, lounging at the swimming pool or sipping cocktails, fine wines and craft beers on the wooden deck at treetop level while enjoying a light lunch. Sunbathe and forestbathe to your heart’s content - it has immense health benefits that will strengthen your immune system, rewire your thought patterns and give you the time to reassess the life path you are following. At night the travellers’ lounge offers a 4-course vegan dinner, each dish a surprise and a new experience, carefully planned and freshly made with the purest ingredients. The ambiance is cosy and warm with beautiful music, an interesting wine list and a crackling fire in winter. Accommodation is simple, yet comfortable with no TVs in the bedrooms (only a communal TV in the bar) and it would be to your advantage to switch off your cell phone. Here you should connect with Nature, your partner, family and friends with no interruption to the quality time you deserve.
