Isaac Petrus VIII "Isaac"
(Afrikaans pronunciation "Izak")
On 19 January 2021, Isaac Petrus number 8 was born in Cape Town.

After Petrus' early death, Isaac and his mom Alismi moved to Graaff-Reinet in 2023 for school and work. Their connection to Doornberg remains strong with frequent visits.

He's growing up hearing stories of his great-great-great-great-great-grandfather who first settled this land, of generations who weathered droughts and built dreams in the Karoo dust, and of his father, whose vision and love for Doornberg still echo across the farm.

One day, Isaac may choose to return to these thorny mountains (as the name Doornberg would suggest), to continue writing the Doornberg story. For now, he's building his own foundation, carrying forward a name and legacy of eight generations.

Isaac Petrus VII "Petrus"
Petrus brought fresh energy and vision to Doornberg when he and his wife Alismi moved to the farm in 2019. After earning his BSc in Medical Microbiology and Honours in Genetics, and years working in Cape Town, he chose to return to Doornberg to build something new.

Together, Petrus and Alismi transformed an old "skuur" near the tennis court into a beautiful wedding venue, a space where countless couples have celebrated their love surrounded by Karoo mountains and family history. Their entrepreneurial spirit and warm hospitality made every event special.

They also fixed up and enlarged the Vlei Huisie to live in, which had previously been a small guest house.
Tragically, he passed away in May 2021 at just 34, only three months after Alismi had given birth to Isaac Petrus VIII.

His impact remains despite his short time on the farm. The wedding venue still stands as a testament to Petrus' vision and the love he shared with Alismi for this special place.

Isaac Petrus VI "Peet"
Peet was born in 1956, the oldest of 4 siblings (photo attached - with their mom Freda). He studied at Grootfontein Agricultural College, where he met Hanna, who was working there studying cold preservation of Angora goats. They got married in 1980. Both of their unique expertise and dedication made them the go-to problem solvers in their community, whether fixing a broken heart or a geyser.

In 1987, at Boet's death, Peet took over the farming, continuing the Isaac Petrus legacy - he'd been learning the ropes alongside his father. Together with Hanna they also transformed Doornberg into the guest haven it is today.

Through decades of hard work, innovation, and genuine hospitality, they built the guest house into something remarkable, with some guests returning for almost 50 years now.

After Hanna's death due to Covid in 2021, Peet continues welcoming guests to Doornberg with the same pride and care. Come experience the warmth of genuine Karoo hospitality where every stone has a story.

Isaac Petrus V "Boet"
Born in 1927, Boet took over Doornberg in 1952 after his father Petsie's passing. He married Freda Alberta de Milander in 1956, a lecturer from the Teachers' College in Graaff-Reinet, and together they raised four children on the farm.

Like his father and uncle before him, Boet dedicated himself to organized agriculture, serving as chairman of the local farmers' association, the Graaff-Reinet wool growers and farmers' union, and the Eastern Cape Agricultural Union. He also served as mayor of Nieu Bethesda and was a passionate advocate for the community, even fighting at his own expense to oppose a liquor license for the town. An interesting stance!

Freda was the heart of the farm, running the farm school as principal and teacher at Doornberg Primary, managing the household with remarkable efficiency, and with Boet started the guest business that is still standing today. They loved to create warm memories for family and visitors alike.

In true van Heerden fashion, Boet even found his own gravestone, a 5-ton cattle rubbing stone on their neighboring farm Eureka. After his sudden passing in 1987, his son Peet carefully (and with lots of effort) transported it to the cemetery, though the fresh grave caused the stone to sink deeper than planned, requiring another day's work to lift it back out!

After Boet's passing, Freda moved to Graaff Reinet first and later Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) where she ran guest houses too, and remained formidable and independent until her passing in 2023 at age 92.

Isaac Petrus van Heerden IV (Petsie)
Born in 1893, Petsie faced tragedy early, losing his mother at just 14. Instead of completing school, he and his brother Abie worked tirelessly to save Doornberg from bankruptcy after the ostrich market collapsed.

Through years of hardship and setbacks (including an ill-timed cattle stud investment!), the brothers' unwavering partnership and determination pulled the farm back from the brink.

During the 1933 depression, Petsie and Abie secured a government loan to build a dam above the homestead. Eighteen men worked for nearly two years using only donkeys, mules, and oxen to complete it by hand.

In 1922, Petsie married Hilda Muriel Eckhard, a trained nurse from the Richmond district. Together they built their life, first moving to Kokstad in 1928 with their two young children, then returning to Doornberg in 1936 where they restored the original farmhouse and continued the family's farming legacy.

Beyond farming, Petsie became a leader in organized agriculture, serving as Chairman of the Cape Agricultural Union and helping establish what would become South Africa's central farmers' organization. His legacy of service, resilience, and family loyalty - strengthened by his partnership with Hilda - remains woven into Doornberg's story.

Isaac Petrus III "Petrus" (1869-1929) was Doornberg's political powerhouse.

After his first wife Elizabeth Catherina (Lizzie) van der Merwe died in 1907, leaving him with five kids, he married Ivy Villiers de Villiers in 1910. (See picture of Petrus and Lizzie).

But he didn't just farm - he became an MP in 1914, and actually crossed party lines when farmers needed his vote to pass a fencing law.

He and other farmers realised that farmers should have more say in the marketing of their products, which led to him helping establish Boere Saamwerk Beperk (BSB), now known as

His friend and poet, C.J. Langenhoven said it best when asked to write his epitaph: "Die engel wat hom kom haal het, het hom in sy werk gekry".
(Translated - "The angel who came to fetch him found him at his work.")
