Isaac Petrus V "Boet"
Born in 1927, Boet took over Doornberg in 1952 after his father Petsie's passing. He married Freda Alberta de Milander in 1956, a lecturer from the Teachers' College in Graaff-Reinet, and together they raised four children on the farm.
Like his father and uncle before him, Boet dedicated himself to organized agriculture, serving as chairman of the local farmers' association, the Graaff-Reinet wool growers and farmers' union, and the Eastern Cape Agricultural Union. He also served as mayor of Nieu Bethesda and was a passionate advocate for the community, even fighting at his own expense to oppose a liquor license for the town. An interesting stance!
Freda was the heart of the farm, running the farm school as principal and teacher at Doornberg Primary, managing the household with remarkable efficiency, and with Boet started the guest business that is still standing today. They loved to create warm memories for family and visitors alike.
In true van Heerden fashion, Boet even found his own gravestone, a 5-ton cattle rubbing stone on their neighboring farm Eureka. After his sudden passing in 1987, his son Peet carefully (and with lots of effort) transported it to the cemetery, though the fresh grave caused the stone to sink deeper than planned, requiring another day's work to lift it back out!
After Boet's passing, Freda moved to Graaff Reinet first and later Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) where she ran guest houses too, and remained formidable and independent until her passing in 2023 at age 92.
