Situated in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, in the foothills of the Drakensburg mountains, Brahman Hills has undergone an extensive renovation since its days as the old Windmills Hotel. The new Brahman Hills team has grown and developed at the same time as the property through a complete facelift in 2015, to create a country home

away from home that promises real experiences, with real people in the tranquil surroundings. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Midlands, yet just a stone’s throw away from the N3 Highway, Brahman Hills is easily accessible and central to the famous Midlands Meander. And with either hotel or self-catering accommodation available, together with a range of noteworthy facilities, including a restaurant, coffee bar, cellar and underground lounge/bar, as well as a variety of eventing venues seating up to 400 people, Brahman Hills is now a destination of choice for those looking for the perfect wedding and conference venue or idyllic country escape. We are proud to be one of only two official Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Partner Gardens in South Africa and honored to have been named Overseas Regional Winner in the 2023 RHS Partner Garden of the Year competition. 🌸 Did you know? Azaleas have long been associated with harmony, renewal and new beginnings, making them a fitting addition to our Sanctuary, where every planting is designed to restore both nature and the human spirit.

Within the Serenity Garden’s planting vision, a burst of colour will unfold along the Way of Water as sweeping azaleas frame the dams and walkways with vibrant ribbons of seasonal blooms. Their spectacular flowers will reflect across the water, creating ever-changing moments of beauty with the light and the seasons.

More than a breathtaking display, these plantings will soften the landscape, support pollinators and biodiversity, and invite visitors to slow down, wander, and reconnect with nature. 💜🌸 💜🌸

✨ When a garden leaves footprints on your heart 💚

Some places are admired. Others stay with you long after you’ve left. There’s nothing more rewarding than hearing how our Sanctuary has touched the hearts of our guests. Sarah Ferguson recently explored our gardens and shared these beautiful words:

“Visiting the Brahman Hills gardens and art installations was a profoundly moving experience. The wild winter Midlands landscape juxtaposed the formal planting was a joy to experience. Bring comfy shoes, it is extensive and needs a few hours (if not days) to truly absorb. The landscaping and gardening team has created something truly special. The fact that this was built during Covid Lockdown heightens one’s appreciation that there is so much light that can be created during dark times. The tribute at the entrance to the garden is a must read. We will be back to view the garden in all her seasons and explore the new Serenity trails.”

Our busy residents at the Bee Kraal do far more than make honey. They help pollinate our gardens, support a thriving ecosystem, and keep nature in perfect balance.

As a sweet bonus, their honey finds its way straight to our kitchen. 🍯💛 Here’s to the tiny workers making a big impact, one flower at a time.👏

This is one of those WOW moments! 😮 Aerial views of the underground wonder where orchids will bloom 😍

Eight metres beneath the earth at Brahman Hills, one of the Serenity Garden’s most extraordinary spaces is beginning to reveal itself. What now appears as a vast construction pit will soon become a hidden world; a 300 m² subterranean sanctuary, where an 8-metre waterfall cascades through hundreds of orchids and more than 300 carefully selected plants.

The living walls will be engineered using Terraforce and specialised planting systems, allowing orchids, ferns and other species to grow directly from the walls themselves. Towering Yellowwoods and ancient Tree Ferns will rise through the space, creating the feeling of discovering a secret forest beneath the landscape.

Today, it’s engineering. Soon, it will feel like discovering a secret place that has always existed. ✨
