A bench by the dam. A walking stick, handmade in the valley, leaning and waiting.

The mountains are either just ahead, or just behind. The stick isn't saying.

The roofing project that's kept our team busy for most of this year is nearly done. One self-catering chalet to go, and then every roof on the property will be sorted, tight, and ready for whatever the Berg weather brings.

Quietly satisfying, that.

An exceptionally interesting and fun evening was shared by all on Saturday evening, as Ian and Jane Smorthwaite, the owners of Abingdon Wine Estate (Lion's River KZN), joined us for a wine tasting evening at Champagne Castle Hotel. Keep watching our pages for news of the next one.

The mountains have a way of giving you all four seasons in a single day. Warm sunshine by mid-morning, a cool breeze in the afternoon, and by evening, you'll want something warm to wear.

It's part of what makes this place so alive.

What's new is that every hotel room and self-catering chalet now has air conditioning. Whatever the mountain weather decides to do, you'll be comfortable from the moment you arrive to the moment you fall asleep.

The Berg at its most unpredictable. You, at your most comfortable.

On Saturday 23 May, we welcome Ian and Jane Smorthwaite, the owners of Abingdon Wine Estate, to Champagne Castle for a complimentary wine tasting. An intimate evening exploring what is quietly one of South Africa's most interesting small producers.

Ian will take you through the wines himself, their story, their character, and what it means to grow something this carefully in this part of the world.

The tasting is complimentary and open to all hotel and self-catering guests staying on the night of Saturday 23 May. Wines featured on the evening will also be available to order from our wine list.

To secure your place at the tasting, simply make sure you're booked in for the night.

Some moments here ask something of you.

This one asked Woudene Lamprecht to set an alarm, step outside before the world was properly awake, and wait for the mountains to catch the first light of the day.

We think it was worth it.

Thank you, Woudene. What a gift to share with all of us.

Every evening, the Central Drakensberg gives us a sunset. Reliable. Generous. Never exactly the same, but always there.

A moonset is something else. Rarer, quieter, and easy to miss if you're not already up and outside when it happens.

Marc was. Early morning, autumn light just catching the rock faces, the moon still hanging above the peaks before it slipped away for the day.

This is what the mountains look like before most people are awake.

Last week we had Dr Derek Fish spend a week with our guests. Derek is a physicist with a PhD and more than three decades of science communication behind him.

He hosted three sessions on alternate evenings, taking guests through the night sky above our mountains. A fascinating evening uncovering the mystery of our sky.

We look forward to welcoming him back later in the year. An experience not to be missed.

As we head into a short week packed with public holidays, we’d like to share a gentle note with our wider community.

From Friday 24th April - Saturday 2nd May (inclusive of both days), Champagne Castle Hotel will be closed to day visitors, allowing us to preserve space and atmosphere for guests staying with us. With limited room across the property, this helps us ensure that in-house guests can fully enjoy the setting they’ve come for.

If you’re planning to visit us as a day guest at another time, we always recommend phoning ahead to check availability, our team will be happy to advise.

Thank you for your understanding, and for helping us care for this special place in the mountains
