We are delighted to have Maria at Witklipfontein for her residency.

Maria Saygua André is a French-Bolivian artist based in Brussels. Her work explores textile knowledge and narratives between Latin America and Europe through installations that merge sculpture, performance, and craft. She develops a ritualistic practice rooted in the territories she explores and the materials she shapes. Through this protocol, she constructs her plural identity. Actively engaged in sociocultural projects, she envisions art as a space for transmission, social connection, and the circulation of knowledge.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, she has presented her work in numerous Belgian and European institutions, including Bozar (Brussels, Belgium), Centre Wallonie Bruxelles (Paris, France), the Contextile Biennial (Guimarães, Portugal) and the Royal Overseas League (London, United Kingdom). She has completed various artistic residencies, such as the TextielMuseum (Tilburg, Netherlands), Espronceda Institute x Art Nou (Barcelona, Spain), the Fondation Carrefour des Arts (Brussels, Belgium) and Kunsthal Gent x Stormopkomst (Ghent, Belgium). She recently received several awards, including the Sofam Prize in 2025, allowing her to pursue her research into sculptural installations and performance.

We are excited to have Mankebe at Witklipfontein for her Artist Residency.

Mankebe Seakgoe (b. 1998) is a Johannesburg-based multidisciplinary artist born in Pietersburg, Limpopo. In 2019 she completed her BFA at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Her practice is a continuous exploration of language, emotion, and the nuanced spaces that exist between comprehension and feeling. Seakgoe’s work seeks to move beyond conventional communication, inviting audiences into a realm where affect and intuition take precedence over literal understanding.

Seakgoe’s process, often likened to André Breton’s concept of “dictation of thought in the absence of all control,” is deeply intuitive. Beginning with meditation, Seakgoe allows her ideas to surface freely, often translating them into charcoal works, canvas compositions, or sculptural forms. This approach underlines her belief in art as a tool for deeper understanding—both of the self and of shared human experience, seeking ever more profound ways to communicate the inexpressible.

In 2026, Seakgoe was awarded the ANNA Award, recognising her as one of the leading emerging women artists on the African continent. Her 2026 presentations and exhibitions include And if we must dance, let it be on water, a solo presentation at FNB Art Joburg presented by RESERVOIR; Materiality v2 at the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town; I keep coming back here, I don’t know why at Stevenson; RMB Latitudes Art Fair with Stevenson; The Poets Are Working at Southern Guild; Experiment. Introduce. Enjoy at KwaLanga; and Investec Cape Town Art Fair with RESERVOIR and her debut solo exhibition, This is not piano…, presented by RESERVOIR.

Recent group exhibitions include The space between attempts at BKhz (2025); A tropology between image & imagination for BMW Art Generation at Nirox Sculpture Park (2025); Feminine front by the Austrian Cultural Forum; autopoiesis at Blank Projects (2025); Chapter Two: Identity and Migration at PSM Gallery, Berlin (2025) and many more.

I look down
and find a world.
Bone. Thorn. Cactus.
Dryness. Silence. Resilience.
Things that scratch,
things that remain.
I gather them from the ground
and bring them together with dung, ash and clay.
The desert leaves its traces.
I simply listen and observe
