It has been an absolute pleasure to have Cow Mash at Witklipfontein for her artist residency. Below are some words from Cow about her artwork:

One of the things I enjoyed most, unexpectedly, was making a fire in the fireplace every day as the weather grew colder. What excited me most was keeping the fire alive, especially overnight. This routine became part of my process, as I began using some of the firewood to create charcoal, which I then crushed into a powder and mixed into a paint-like paste.

Initially, I was simply determined to find ways of creating black from natural materials. After experimenting with the charcoal paste, I look forward to combining it with cow dung in future works. The process also opened up possibilities for painting, a medium I have largely stayed away from throughout my career is now up for consideration.

True to my practice, I found myself drawn to nature's details and textures. I attempted to mimic some of these textures in my process, and I leave with a library of natural surfaces and patterns that will undoubtedly influence my future artworks. The stillness of the environment made it easier to observe these textures closely.

I detached myself from a fixed plan and allowed nature to humble and guide me. In the end, the residency became an exploration, marked by slow processes, observation, and experimentation. Ultimately, it was a peaceful study of texture, in black, of course.

I am thankful for the experience, to the Witklip team for their hospitality throughout the stay, and to SAFFCA for the invitation. šalang gabotse! (3 black hearts)

Barbara had a lovely time at Witklipfontein during her residency.

During her residency in South Africa, she developed a translucent skin made from cassava, a material born in Latin America and carried across colonial routes that also transported rhythms, recipes, memories, and resistance.

On these fragile surfaces, she drew using pigments made from minerals and crater stones collected during her time inside the dome crater landscape where she has been living and researching. The works become traces of transformation: organic, transparent, a mysterious third space.

As a multidisciplinary artist, she is interested in this “third space” where Afro and Latino histories meet — shaped by displacement, colonization, adaptation, and creation. She collects stories, materials, sounds, and gestures to understand identity not as something fixed, but as something constantly shifting and becoming.

This research continues through film, sculpture, and organic materials during her final month in South Africa, before the project travels to Johannesburg, Lion Sand Game residency and later to Brussels and Paris.

Barabara wants to give a big thanks to Xavier, Pierre and especially Andile Buka for colaborating with her and bringing these images to life.
