Wildlife Wednesday 🌿✨

The crowned eagle is also known as the African crowned eagle, or the crowned hawk-eagle, and is a large bird of prey found in Central and Southern Africa.

The crowned eagle is an extremely talkative bird with a noisy, undulating show flight. They will often call all year round with loud whistles, mostly related to breeding.

Have you ever heard them in the wild?

Wildlife Wednesday 🌿✨

African wildcats (Felis lybica), are small and slender felines who thrive across diverse habitats from the sun-drenched savannas of Africa to the rugged terrains of parts of Asia.

Notably, this fascinating creature of Felidae holds a pivotal role in history, as genetic research reveals it as the ancestor of the modern house cat—domestication began approximately 9,000 years ago in the Near East—when wildcats started to thrive in close proximity to burgeoning human agricultural practices, carving a unique partnership that would influence both species for millennia.

Planning your holidays for June, July and August? ✨

Look no further! Coming during that time in South Africa, in our wondeful winter time, is the chance to experience the dry season.
This means it is an excellent time for wildlife enthusiasts, as the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot animals in the wild.

Being 20 minutes away from the Kruger gives you the chance to spot all your favorite animals and then come back to relax at our lodge and take in the peaceful nature around you!

Furthermore, this is the best time to visit South Africa since the cooler temperatures allow travelers to enjoy the outdoors. You can expect sunny and clear skies. These weather conditions will allow you to appreciate the landscape more and capture picturesque scenery!

Wildlife Wednesday 🌿✨

Medium-sized animals are always overlooked. Foxes and jackals are mid-tier predators and don’t get the attention of the lions or snakes on either side of their scale.

Tuna aren’t as interesting as sharks for the same reason, and duikers, medium-sized antelope from Sub-Saharan Africa, are living in the shadows of elephants and rhinos, despite being more abundant and just as ecologically important.

The word duiker comes from the word for ‘diver’, which is a reference to how effectively these small bovids can get outta Dodge when threatened. They’re very fast when they need to be, and will dart around in all directions, diving into a bush as soon as they get the chance.

Have you had the chance to spot a Duiker in the wild?

Ever wonder what was flying above your head at sunset?

The Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bat!! Which is a type of large bat. It belongs to a family also known as fruit bats. You can often find this bat flying around in southern Africa.

Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bats fly relatively slowly. They can sometimes be a bit clumsy, bumping into other bats or obstacles. Before they leave their roost for the night, they spend up to 30 minutes carefully grooming themselves. Most of their flying happens in the first three hours after sunset.

So next time, when enjoying a sundowner at Timbila, look up, you might see some fruit bats!
