RAISING THE NEXT GENERATION OF BIRDERS

In a world of screens, noise and constant distraction, birding gives children something increasingly valuable — a reason to stop, look, listen and wonder.

It gets them outdoors. It builds patience and observation. It sparks questions about animals, habitats and the world around them. And unlike so many childhood activities, birding is something they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.

But there is something even more important.

Children protect what they learn to love.

Let a child experience the excitement of finding a bird for themselves, and suddenly a wetland isn't just water, a grassland isn't empty space and a tree isn't simply a tree. Nature starts to mean something.

So where better to begin?

The greater Zaagkuilsdrift–Kgomo-Kgomo area has recorded more than 430 bird species, across wetlands, grasslands and thornveld — giving young beginners an incredible natural classroom to explore.

Don't worry about how many species they can identify.

Let them search. Let them listen. Let them ask questions. Let them get it wrong. And let them experience the excitement of being the first to shout:

Dust off your binoculars and lifers list, because the SANParks Honorary Rangers of Johannesburg Region are excited to invite you to the world-famous bird watcher’s paradise, Zaagkuilsdrift.
We’ll search for elusive birds along the Kgomo-Kgomo floodplain and Zaagkuilsdrift road, guided by expert spotters. Once the last bird calls fade, join us around the braai fire for friendly banter and great prizes.
