We are incredibly proud to finally announce something very close to our hearts.

On 22 August 2026, Zaagkuilsdrift Bird Sanctuary & Lodge, in partnership with the Newman family, will host The Kenneth Newman Legacy Evening — a special event honouring 20 years since the passing of one of South Africa’s most beloved bird artists, storytellers, and field guide pioneers.

This intimate evening will bring together birders, conservationists, artists, collectors, media, and lovers of the natural world for a celebration of art, birds, conservation, and legacy under the African sky.

For us, this is far more than simply an event. Kenneth Newman inspired generations of South Africans to notice birds for the very first time. His books travelled across the country in backpacks, cubbyholes, game vehicles, school bags, and field guide pockets, shaping countless journeys into nature.

To now host an evening celebrating that legacy, together with the Newman family themselves, is something we consider a genuine honour.

As we build towards the evening, we would also love for the public to continue sharing their personal Kenneth Newman memories, photographs, stories, sketches, and treasured field guides with us. The response so far has already been incredibly special, and a beautiful reminder of how deeply Kenneth’s work touched people across generations.

A limited number of Legacy Seats will also be announced in the coming weeks for individuals who embody Kenneth Newman’s spirit of curiosity, conservation, and passion for birds.
