Robberg Peninsula Hike – Plettenberg Bay
The Robberg hike in Plettenberg Bay is one of the most spectacular coastal hikes on the Garden Route. The trail runs along the Robberg Peninsula, a rugged piece of land that stretches about 4 km into the Indian Ocean, giving incredible ocean views on both sides. 
It’s famous for dramatic cliffs, seal colonies, hidden beaches, dunes, caves, and marine wildlife like whales and dolphins.
🥾 The 3 Robberg Hiking Routes
All routes start from the same parking area inside Robberg Nature Reserve and are circular trails.
1️⃣ Gap Circuit (Short Walk)
• Distance: ~2 km
• Time: 30–45 minutes
• Difficulty: Easy
• Good for: Families or quick scenic walk
Highlights:
• Cliff viewpoints
• Coastal fynbos
• Easy boardwalk paths

2️⃣ Witsand Circuit (Medium Route)
• Distance: ~5–5.5 km
• Time: 2–2.5 hours
• Difficulty: Moderate 
Highlights:
• Sand dunes and beaches
• Seal colony views
• Some climbing and stairs
This is the most popular option if you want a good hike without committing to the full trail.

3️⃣ The Point Circuit (Full Robberg Hike)
• Distance: ~9 km
• Time: 3–4 hours
• Difficulty: Moderate–challenging 
Highlights:
• Walk to the very tip of the peninsula
• Massive seal colony below the cliffs
• Scrambling over rocks and boulders
• Hidden beaches and caves
This route is considered the best and most scenic but requires decent fitness.

The rocks here are extremely ancient — over 120 million years old, and the cave shows evidence of Stone Age human habitation.

⚠️ Safety Tips
The hike is beautiful but can be dangerous if unprepared.
Important tips:
• Bring 1.5–2 L water per person
• Wear proper hiking shoes
• Start early in the morning (little shade)
• Watch for steep cliffs and slippery rocks
• Avoid the hike in strong wind or rain 
There have been rescues after falls, so hikers should stay alert on narrow sections.

• Early morning (cooler and better light)
• Sunset is beautiful but make sure you have time to finish the trail

✅ Local tip:
If you only have time for one hike in Plett, do the Witsand route or full Point circuit. The section near the Point is the most dramatic.
