Early spring has its chilly moments — which means there’s still plenty of time for cosy corners, crackling fires and settling in with a good book.

Freshly baked chiffon cake, deliciously light and airy, enjoyed while sipping copious cups of hot tea, admiring the views of paddocks and mountains, and soaking up the gentle rays of sunshine that come with the first week of spring.

Crackling wood in the fireplace, and the smell of home-made cooking wafting out of the kitchen. Wind whispering in the Blue gum trees outside, drowned out by gentle farm noises and the rhythmic clip clop of horses’ hooves on cobbled paths as they pass by on their way to the stables.

You’d be forgiven for assuming that these sights and sounds have been plucked straight from a novel set in the English countryside, only the dreamy location is our very own Kurland farm.

Tucked away in the Crags, just 20 minutes from Plettenberg Bay, amidst rolling fields of countryside, is Kurland. It’s a place that feels wonderfully removed from our modern-day woes; a place where time slows down and nature takes priority.

There’s always something to spot at Kurland.

We recently welcomed BirdLife Plettenberg Bay for a morning of birding across the farm — from the gardens and open fields to the indigenous forest and, of course, the dam.

With so many different habitats, every walk brings something new, and no two bird lists are quite the same.

At its heart, Kurland has always been about connection — to nature, to family, and to the people we share it with.

And perhaps no one knows that better than the four Kurland sisters: Di, Nicky, Alex and Glenda.

We sat down with them to chat about family, food, gardening, making memories and the simple rituals that make Kurland feel like home. There was plenty of laughter too, and quite a few sentences finished for each other.

If you know Kurland, you’ll know the Homestead veranda.

It’s the first place you head to in the morning, the place you gather for a drink in the afternoon, and very often where the day ends too.

From here, you can look across the paddocks to the mountains, watch the pool come to life, wander over to the spa, or simply sit and watch the farm go about its business.

And if you’re lucky, you’ll see the sheep making their way home as the light starts to fade.

With the Homestead rooms gathered around it, the veranda really is the heart of the house.

You’ll probably spend more time here than you planned.
