This isn’t a normal safari.
At Somkhanda, the bush can take you far beyond game drives and sightings.
During a recent operational conservation week hosted for Brothers Safaris, guests had the opportunity to experience the realities of wildlife conservation up close, from rhino dehorning and lion veterinary work to elephant collaring, field teams, long days in the bush and the moments in between.
And then there’s the other side of Somkhanda. Sunrise breakfasts overlooking the reserve. Sundowners in wild places. Good food, warm hospitality and stories shared after a day you won’t forget.
These are real conservation operations, carried out when required and under the direction of experienced veterinary and conservation teams. That’s what makes the experience so special. You’re not watching a staged attraction. You’re being given a window into the work required to protect and manage a living Big 5 reserve.

Cannot believe its been a year since Adriaan passed away and being the same day of my birthday. .. it brings deep thoughts, great memories, sadness and happiness.

I constructed a beautifully illustrated coffee book with all Adriaan's creative images of Somkhanda - it reflects his passion for wild life, flora and the Gumbi community .This 100 page photographic book sits at reception of Somkhanda for all guests, fiends and family to enjoy. Images of coffee book will be shown in next post.

Management and staff of Somkhanda make sure his legacy lives on at Somkhanda.
