🔑 A very special visitor to Whistlewood

Yesterday, we had a rather unexpected and very special visitor at Whistlewood.

John Jefferys, one of the previous owners of our home, returned to the house with his daughter. It was wonderful to see him standing outside the place that had once been part of his and Priscilla life, and to hear him reminisce about the house and its history.

But he brought something with him that made the visit particularly special.

An old wrought-iron key. 🔑 actually suggested by his wife Priscilla who could not travel with them on this occasion from Australia.

John was very clear about where it belonged. He immediately identified it as the key to the back door of the kitchen — a door whose original lock is still in place today.

Whistlewood dates to around 1875, and the key has all the character of an old Victorian piece. Although the lock is no longer used — we now have a modern Yale lock for security — we have kept the original lock on the door because it is part of the character and history of the house.

And now, thanks to John and Priscilla we have the key that belongs to it. đź’›

We are going to have it carefully framed and keep it here at Whistlewood — not simply as an old key, but as a little piece of the house’s story, returned to the home where it belongs.

There was something rather lovely about watching a former owner return to the house and recognise a key he had known many years ago.

Sometimes history doesn’t have to be found in an archive. Sometimes, it arrives back at your front door — with a key in its hand.

Getting Whistlewood ready for a chilly evening… 🕯️

The heaters are on, the lights are glowing and everything is ready for our guests arriving this evening.

With a cold front bringing rain later tonight and tomorrow, it’s a good reminder that sometimes the best place to be is somewhere warm and welcoming.

Welcome to Whistlewood. đź’š

A little drama in the Whistlewood garden today…

I spotted this beautiful African Goshawk in the garden with its prey. I quietly reached for the camera, hoping to capture a few photographs — but clearly it had other ideas and disappeared the moment it noticed me!

The feathers left behind told the rest of the story. 🪶

One of the joys of having a garden filled with trees, grasses and indigenous planting is the wildlife that visits us — sometimes peaceful, sometimes a little more dramatic!

You just never know who might arrive at Whistlewood. 🌿

Today we celebrate women. 🌿

The women who nurture.
The women who lead.
The women who inspire.
The women who quietly hold everything together.

Happy Women’s Day to the incredible women of South Africa. 🇿🇦

May you always have room to grow, to flourish and to become exactly who you are meant to be.

Behind every comfortable night’s sleep…

Freshly laundered, carefully pressed, and prepared with pride.

Long before our guests arrive, there’s plenty happening behind the scenes. Every sheet, duvet cover and pillowcase is washed, pressed and checked to make sure your room is as crisp and welcoming as it should be.

A huge thank you to our wonderful housekeeping team for the care and dedication they bring to Whistlewood every single day. ❤️

Because it’s often the little details that make the biggest difference.

A little sign that spring is on its way 🌿

The snowdrops are blooming in the Whistlewood garden — always a welcome sign that we’re on the right side of winter.

The days are slowly getting longer, the garden is beginning to stir, and spring doesn’t feel quite so far away. 🌱

One of my favourite little seasonal moments at Whistlewood.

🌸 It’s Protea Season… one of my favourite times of the year.

There’s something unmistakably South African about a protea. Bold, beautiful and wonderfully unique, they seem perfectly at home in every corner of Whistlewood.

During protea season you’ll find them in our gardens, in our guest rooms, in the farmhouse, and even in the artwork that decorates our walls. They’re more than just flowers—they’re part of the character of our home.

One of my favourite little rituals is stopping by the florist to see the incredible varieties that appear at this time of year. Every bunch is different, and every arrangement brings a little bit of the South African countryside indoors.

If you’re visiting us this winter, keep an eye out—you’ll almost certainly spot a protea somewhere during your stay. ❤️

Every room should tell a story…

At Whistlewood, we’ve always believed that nature belongs indoors too.

This beautiful bird has found its place in the shared living area of our Garden Cottage—a gentle reminder of the birds, gardens and quiet moments that surround us.

On a rainy winter afternoon, with a warm cup of coffee in hand, it’s one of those little details that makes the cottage feel like home.

We hope our guests love it as much as we do.

“Every detail at Whistlewood is chosen to make our guests feel at home.” 🕊️

🌿 A Visitor to the Wild Meadow

“One of the little joys of spending time in the Whistlewood gardens is never quite knowing who will appear. This beautiful feline visitor occasionally wanders into our wild meadow, finds a sunny spot, and reminds us that the best afternoons are the unhurried ones. Between the birdsong, the flowers and moments like these, life at Whistlewood moves at a gentler pace.”

Some evenings remind us why we love what we do. 🌅

Last night’s sunset painted the skies above Whistlewood Guest House with the most incredible shades of gold, peach and pink. As the day quietly came to an end, all that could be heard was birdsong and the gentle ripple of the pool.

Moments like these aren’t planned—they’re simply part of the Whistlewood experience.

We look forward to welcoming you to our little oasis in Walmer, Gqeberha.
