Booking Platforms vs. Booking Direct: What Actually Matters
When you're booking a guesthouse, you'll usually have two options: go through a platform like Booking.com, Airbnb, or Expedia, or contact the property directly, often now via WhatsApp.
Both are legitimate. But they serve different purposes, and knowing the difference can save you money, time, and the occasional headache.
Platforms exist to help you compare and trust. If you don't know a guesthouse yet, a platform gives you verified reviews, secure payment, and a familiar cancellation process.
That's real value, especially the first time you're booking somewhere unfamiliar. The trade-off is that platforms take a commission, usually 15–20% and that cost is baked into the room rate you see. You're also often talking to a booking system rather than a person, which matters if your plans change last-minute or you have a specific request.
Booking direct works best once you know what you want. If you've already found the guesthouse, through a friend's recommendation, a previous stay, or simply liking what you saw on their page, reaching out directly, often via WhatsApp, usually gets you a faster, more personal response.
Many smaller guesthouses will also match or beat the platform price when you book direct, since they're not paying commission on that booking. You're also talking to someone who can actually answer specific questions:
“Is there a quiet room away from the street?” gets a real answer, not a guess.
A simple way to decide:

â—Ź Already know the place, or been referred to it, and want flexibility or a better rate? Message direct.
â—Ź Booking on someone else's behalf (a PA booking for a manager, for example)? Direct contact is usually faster, you can ask questions in real time instead of guessing from a listing.
Neither option is “wrong.” The mistake is not knowing you have the choice.
