Lalibela Wildlife Reserve is located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, close to Port Elizabeth and Addo, which means it is not only malaria free, but spans 5 ecosystems, resulting in a breath-taking diversity of flora and fauna. Lalibela consists of 10,500 hectares (approximately 26,000 acres) and is home to the Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo & leopard) as well as other predators like ch

eetah, hyena, jackal & lynx. We are blessed with vast African plains and this is why we have multitudes of zebra, giraffe, warthog, impala, wildebeest, blesbuck and various other antelope species.

Giraffes often seem just as curious about you as you are about them. They'll pause what they're doing, lift their heads above the bush, and spend a few moments studying the vehicle and the people inside. It is this quiet curiosity that makes every giraffe sighting feel so personal.

Built for life among the treetops, giraffes have tongues that can grow up to 50cm long. Their dark coloring helps protect them from the sun as they feed on leaves beyond the reach of most other animals.

Cheetahs are among Africa's most iconic predators, but they are also one of its most vulnerable. Low genetic diversity, habitat loss and pressure on wild populations continue to challenge the long-term future of the species.

At Lalibela, our cheetah conservation efforts focus on maintaining healthy genetics within the population. By introducing cheetahs from different regions, we help increase genetic diversity and support stronger, more resilient populations for the future.

These efforts form part of a broader conservation approach that looks beyond individual sightings and focuses on the long-term wellbeing of the species. Every cheetah seen on the reserve is part of a much bigger story about protecting wildlife and preserving wild spaces for generations to come.

Every time you head out into the reserve, the experience is different. Some days bring plenty of wildlife sightings. Other days are about the landscape, the tracks in the road, or the small moments that are easy to miss. And every now and then, something completely unexpected happens. That's part of what makes a safari so special. You can follow the same route twice and come away with a completely different story.

Mills Manor offers a quieter, more private way to experience Lalibela. Set apart from the rest of the lodges, it gives you space to settle in and move through the day at your own pace. The wide verandas, open living areas, and views across the valley all add to that feeling of stillness. With a private guide and a setting that feels removed, the experience becomes more personal and unhurried, shaped around how you choose to spend your time.

Mornings begin slowly here. There is usually a cup of coffee in hand, a bit of mist still hanging in the air, and that quiet feeling before the day fully starts. It is often in these early moments that the bush begins to shift. You hear something before you see it, or notice movement where there was none a moment before. There is no rush to it. The day unfolds in its own time.

A walking safari gives you a completely different way to experience the bush. You start noticing things you’d usually miss from a vehicle. Fresh tracks in the sand. The smell of wild herbs underfoot. Birds calling somewhere in the distance. Everything feels slower, quieter, and far more connected.

Being able to encounter wildlife at ground level is something truly special. It gives you a deeper respect for the animals and the landscape around you. There’s a real sense of perspective when you experience the bush on its terms.

Our rangers are specially trained to guide walking safaris safely and responsibly. Their knowledge of animal behaviour and the surrounding environment allows guests to relax and fully take in the experience, knowing they are in capable hands.

It’s one of the most rewarding ways to experience the wild, and a privilege not many people get to have.

Just beyond the wildlife, there is another part of Lalibela that matters just as much. In Seven Fountains, the focus is on people, on building something that lasts. Through the community outreach work, there is ongoing support for education, daily meals, and opportunities for growth.

It is steady, practical work that makes a real difference over time. A stay here connects to more than the landscape. It supports the people who are part of it and helps strengthen the wider community around Lalibela.

Mark’s Camp has a different feel to it. It is easy, open, and built for time together. Families settle in quickly here, with space for children to explore and time for adults to slow down.

Between game drives, there is always something happening, or nothing at all if that is what you need. It is a place where days unfold naturally and where being together is the main part of the experience.

When the rain comes, the landscape shifts almost overnight. The dust settles, the colours come through stronger, and there is a different kind of movement across the land. Some animals become more active, others take their time, and fresh tracks replace the old ones.

It is a reminder that nothing here stays the same for long. Each season has its own rhythm, and the land responds in its own way.

At first glance, it is just a pattern. But the more you look, the more you notice how no two zebras are ever the same. Each set of stripes is unique, almost like a fingerprint.

In a herd, those markings do more than stand out. They help protect. When the group moves together, the stripes break up their shape and make it harder for predators to focus on one animal. It is a small detail, but it says a lot about how nature works.
