The Country Store: A Place of Connection

There is a particular warmth that greets you upon crossing the threshold of the Country Store, quite apart from anything the Karoo sun might offer. It is the warmth of recognition, of familiar faces meeting once again amongst shelves laden with the quiet treasures of another era.

Here, connection is woven into every corner. It lives in the well loved antiques that carry stories longer than any of us can recall, each piece having passed through hands and homes before finding its way to ours. It lives too in jars of fig jam prepared by neighbours whose gardens have fed this village for generations, a small and generous act repeated season after season. And it lives, most plainly, in mornings spent over breakfast at the Fig Leaf Café, where conversation lingers as long as the coffee does.

In this photograph, that spirit needs no further explanation. An embrace, freely given to Colleen, says what words so often cannot: that the Country Store has never merely sold objects. It has held people, held memory, and held community, one visit at a time.

Come and be part of the story.

The courtyard is putting on its spring coat.

The creepers have found the poles at last and are climbing them properly now, threading up and over, starting to frame the little corners where people sit with their coffee before the heat sets in. Everything out here is getting greener by the day, and there’s that particular kind of light that only shows up in Karoo spring, low and soft through new leaves.

We’re getting the garden ready for Prince Albert Open Gardens, 25 to 27 September. If you’re planning to visit for it (and you should), Country Stay is a good place to base yourself. Come sit under the tree, watch the fountain, and let the town’s gardens do the rest.

A Perfect Weekend for the Vino Camino

The weather could not be more obliging, Prince Albert is filling with visitors, and there is a wonderful sense of occasion settling over the town this weekend.

We are honoured to be sharing the Camino with three of the finest winemakers the Western Cape has to offer: Rock of Eye Wines, Migliarina Wines, and ᴍɪɴɪᴍᴀʟɪꜱᴛ ᴡɪɴᴇꜱ Each brings a distinct voice to the glass, wines shaped with care, patience, and an unmistakable sense of place.

Come wander the village, connect with the winemakers themselves, and savour wines that speak of sun warmed soil and quiet craftsmanship. Walk the streets slowly. Taste something extraordinary. Let the scents of the Karoo, dust, fynbos, and the last of the afternoon light, settle around you as you go.

This is a weekend for lingering, for good conversation, and for wine worthy of the company.

We look forward to welcoming you.

The Vino Camino Returns to Prince Albert This Weekend

The tables are being laid, the winemakers are arriving, and Prince Albert is alive with quiet anticipation. This weekend, the Vino Camino returns to our streets once more.

Last year, the village came together in a way that lingers in the memory. Glasses raised beneath the Karoo sky, conversations unhurried, and that particular warmth found only in a small town where everyone turns out for one another. It was, in every sense, a gathering worth remembering.

This weekend, we do it again. Tickets are limited, and demand is high, so we encourage you to secure yours without delay. Come wander from stop to stop, meet the winemakers behind each bottle, and share in a weekend Prince Albert will be talking about for some time to come.

Reserve your ticket now, and join us on the Camino.

The Secret Garden - save the date

In the creaminess of the Karoo, right in the centre of town, there’s a secret.

Walk through the antique store, past the stories held in old things, and at the back you’ll find it: an English garden hidden away from the road.

Bees buzzing. Birds singing. Greenery spilling into the heart of the Karoo.

A little secret oasis where antiques tell a story, and hospitality and friendship converge.

Because this isn’t just an antique store.

It’s a country stay, a guest house, a country store — and a secret garden waiting to be discovered.

Come stay with us. Wander through the garden. Lose yourself in the stories. Make a weekend of it.

Save the date: 25–27 September and workshop tickets go live 1 September.

And if you’d like to make the secret garden your home for the weekend, book your stay with us

At Country Stay, every room invites you to slow down and notice the details. This chair sits in one of our bathroom nooks, holding a stack of fresh towels while they wait for you to need them. It’s a Victorian balloon back chair, japanned in black with mother of pearl inlay and gilt detailing along the crest rail and legs, the kind of piece that would have sat in a proper drawing room a hundred and fifty years ago. The wear on the gilt has built up over decades of real use, giving it a depth and character no new finish can replicate.

This is what Country Store is built around. Pieces with history, presence, and craftsmanship, each one carrying its own story into the next home it belongs to.

If you’ve been wanting to bring something like this into your own space, whether it’s a statement piece or a small detail for a bathroom or a quiet corner, come see it in person. Stay with us for the weekend, walk through the store, and take home a piece that already has a story before it even gets to yours.

Book a stay or pop into the store this week.

Redressing the rooms, part two.

Colleen’s still at it. This time it’s the sitting room and the two rooms at the far end that have had a refresh, with a few new finds from Knysna Fine Art mixed in with pieces that have been sitting in our own store for a while, just waiting for the right spot.

Every piece goes in because it earns its place, and sometimes that takes weeks of moving things around before something feels right.

If a piece catches your eye, DM us. Most of what you see in these rooms is for sale.

Come stay and see it in person.
