Madikwe Hills Set within 75 000 hectares of safari park, Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge is situated on a hill in
(308)

Madikwe Game Reserve is home not only to the Big Five of Africa (Lion, Buffalo, Elephant, Rhino and Leopard), but also to a wealth of over 66 mammal species, including the rare African Wild Dog, as well as Cheetah, Eland, Kudu, Giraffe and a range of more than 300 resident and migratory species of birds. Situated on the Botswana border, just three hours' drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria, Madikwe is one of the largest private game reserves in South Africa. The safari reserve consists of vast plains of open woodlands and grasslands, dissected by a ridge of rugged hills and bordered in the south by the Dwarsberg Mountains. The area is dotted with huge rocky outcrops known as inselbergs. Madikwe is one of few game reserves in the world that was proclaimed a wildlife reserve purely on the grounds of being the most appropriate and sustainable land area for such use.

The elusive Leopards of Madikwe

Over the past while we’ve been fortunate enough to have some incredible encounters with Leopards here in Madikwe. Although majority of the population consists of some very shy animals, there are a few individuals that seem to be becoming a little more habituated around the presence of the vehicles. Seeing a Leopard in Madikwe is always a special occasion and we look forward to what the future holds for these magnificent creatures within the reserve.

Hyena Cubs

Proof that glow downs do exist. Spotted Hyena cubs are one of the cutest animals we get here in Madikwe when they are still young. As time goes on their looks do change into one of the less attractive looking species. But despite their looks when they are older they still remain an important species within the ecosystem of the reserve and are always a joy to spend time around.

A moment of mutual curiosity. πŸ’
Those eyes say it all. We observe them, but they observe us, too. Because in the wild, every encounter is a silent exchange between those who watch and those who allow themselves to be watched!

Mud bath time 🐘

A big Elephant bull trying to churn up a small mud wallow with his feet so he can take a mud bath. Animals like Elephants, Rhinos, Buffalo and Warthogs with often take mud baths for a number of different reasons. Often on very hot days you can find them covering their bodies with mud as a way to help cool off and also protect their skin from the sun. They also use the mud as a natural insect repellent which helps keep flies and other parasites off the skin.
