Statement by the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Nomsa Dube-Ncube following reports of lodges and hotels accepting travellers from high-risk countries_

In my capacity as MEC for Tourism, I continue to interact with the Minister of Tourism Ms Mmamaloko Kubayi-Ngubane regarding measures that have been put in place by government to contain the spread of Corona-virus. Some of the measures we have discussed include a travel ban.

Accordingly, we have scheduled a meeting with stakeholders in the tourism industry such as hotels – restaurants - lodges – Bread and Breakfast and others.

The meeting is aimed at discussing a recovery plan post Corona-virus outbreak.

Critically, we wish to remind tourism stakeholders in all corners of KwaZulu-Natal of a travel ban under a state of disaster as was announced by the national government.

Travellers from 10 high-risk countries are not welcome in KZN until the ban is lifted by proclamation. The list is in line with risk rating of the World Health Organisation.

We remain concerned that there are some establishments that continue to accept travellers from some of the countries regarded as high-risk.

We are liaising with the KZN MEC for Health Nomagugu-Simelane regarding health screenings of workers and communities who might have been exposed.

We urge stakeholders to adhere to the travel regulations which are intended to curb the spread and ultimately ensure the safety of the people of this province.

We wish to draw the attention of tourism industry to the list of the high-risk countries, from which travellers are unfortunately not welcome:-

1. United States of America
2. Iran
3. South Korea
4. United Kingdom
5. Spain
6. Switzerland
7. China
8. France
9. Germany
10. Italy

According to the travel regulations, travellers from medium-risk countries listed below are subject to intense health screening:-

1. Portugal
2. Hong Kong
3. Singapore
