Highs and Lows….Eva found 2 baby leopard tortoises whose insides had been eaten by ants.
Oh how sad we were!

Then late yesterday Zelda spotted a mound that suddenly moved.
And another one a short distance away.
These hatchlings must have hatched yesterday….so unbelievable!
Eva rinsed them off, not sure if that’s the right thing to do…
and kept them overnight.
This morning we released them onto sun-soaked lawn…and off they wandered, now nowhere to be seen.
Hoping they will be safe 🙏🏻
Once again, marvelling at God’s amazing Creation.

Leopard Tortoises eggs incubate for anything from 8-15 months….I find that amazing.
They reach sexual maturity between 12 and 15 years, can live up to 80-100 years.
Such a special morning with these little tortoises #

Tinkerbelle and I left the farm early this morning….an absolutely glorious Karoo morning.
How Green is our Valley!….immensely thankful for recent rains…my heart was soaring.

We needed a very early refuelling stop at Three Sisters, literally 40 mins from the farm; halfway between Richmond and Beaufort West.

I’d completely forgotten about this little gem!

It was such a great start to our trip to Cape Town….so much care shown, gorgeous gardens, comfortable places to enjoy one’s “Padkos”.

Fascinating to see the old Oxwagon axle preserved and displayed, as well as Giant Cacti….incredible.
Someone has really gone beyond what is expected at a fuel stop on the N1.

Just thought this info might be useful to Roadtrippers passing through the Karoo, hopefully staying at BloemhofKaroo!!!

Sound On pse

So much knowledge about the Karoo!…never ceases to amaze me.

On a stroll around the farmstead, Salman picked this bunch of “wilde als”, first I’ve known we have it in abundance on the farm.

This is African Wormwood….
Artemisia afra…cousin to the Daisy family, has a high concentration of essential oils, indigenous to South Africa.

Wormwood offers so many health benefits…fights parasitic infections, has antioxidant, antibacterial and antifingal properties.
Many many more benefits!

Thank You Salman for opening our eyes to this amazing plant.

Our Country…Our Karoo….
we are all CUSTODIANS and STEWARDS of the pleasant places we come upon in our lives.

These lands were here long before we came upon them, and they will still be here forever after we’re gone from them.

Our South African Heritage is treasured, and we are thankful to have the opportunity to preserve it to the best of our ability.

So thankful also to our Guests who have this deep understanding of custodianship and preservation 🙏🏻

Of course one never has any idea what a morning walk can offer…
this was so special.

Rutting fallow deer….they make a huge rasping grunting sound, can literally continue for a week or more.

So thankful to have these magical moments….

We’re needing to feed the Sable almost every second day at the moment .

Such a thrill and privelege to watch their behavioural patterns so close up.
Can literally watch for hours…

Thankful for this extraordinary footage of an Aardvark captured last week by a wonderful guest on the farm.

An Aardvark sighting like this is absolutely extraordinary.

Firstly, they are nocturnal!

Their long snout is called a Proboscis.

Am so excited to do some research and make a detailed Blog about this incredible animal,
seems there are some habitat changes occurring.

Nature never ceases to amaze! 🙏🏻

Immense Joy!

Water overflowing for weeks now from deep underground at Kudu Rock.

The water table is so high after wonderful recent rains….it’s quite a sight to behold….this water coming through the rock day and night for several weeks now.

We’re overflowing with gratitude…but know that in the Karoo, there is always a hard drought time ahead.
