Richmond's first snow of 2026!

We awoke to beautiful snow covering our garden. It is still snowing... Big fat flakes falling from the sky. Our garden looks very different to a few months ago.

Winter has arrived!!! Thankfully we have our Karoo Creations • Bespoke Wool Products wool duvets in all our guest rooms.

Much ❤️ from the Karoo!

RICHMOND HIGH SCHOOL 2026 MATRIC FAREWELL

What a privilege to host the Matric Class of 2026 for their photoshoots before one of life's most memorable events for them.

To the young ladies, your glamour and beauty shone through - you all were the epitome of elegance. And the gents were so dashing and handsome.

Having families and friends supporting these young souls on such an important event was so heartwarming to see.

We wish you a spectacular evening tonight. You are all so special, and we hope you got some gorgeous photos.

30 years apart...

I was so blessed to have been shown a photo of The Belsana Hotel's housekeeping team from 1996. Back then it belonged to the van Wyk family.

Sadly only two of these ladies are still alive, one of them being Moeksie's mother... Who now works in our team.

I had to recreate the photo with our ladies... History is so precious and this is a way to share it.

We've been off socials for a hot minute while setting up the rest of our rooms after our first guests checked out from our soft opening!

The change in the guest rooms after the floors have been done is quite amazing! They seem lighter and fresher than our old dark-stained wood floors.

Our guest dining room has also undergone a bit of a colour change from the dark burgundy it was before.

We are excited for our official opening soon, when our website goes live and we start taking bookings.

Onwards and upwards.

Much ❤️ from the Karoo.

Some sneaky pics!

Our team worked like a well oiled machine today to pull of a huge achievement.

We are so proud of our little Inn.

More pics coming soon.

And we have a new name!!! It's apparently not official until it is on social media, so here's the big announcement:

Welcome to
THE RICHMOND INN

So why the change of name? Well, technically we're not a hotel. There's no bar, restaurant or a spa. We're also not really a guesthouse or a B&B.

We just offer great, clean, simple rooms for road travellers in an historic building... And that definition is an inn.

Our new website will be going live soon, when we have all our rooms ready for official photos.

Another day and a bit until our first guests arrive. Wish us luck!

Lots of ❤️ from the Karoo.

Today marks seven years as a Richmonder...

We pulled up outside the old hotel at 06:00 on 1 March 2019, full of dreams and enthusiasm. After a few "spoeg-en-plak" cosmetic renovations (as much as our budget would allow), we opened our little guest business.

Guests could never understand why we didn't use the main entrance door. I think these pictures tell the story. We didn't want them seeing how bad the building looked from the outside! 😄

Then came the dreaded pandemic, and the start of our wool duvet business, and this old building became the factory until we bought another dilapidated old building and renovated that into a proper factory.

27 February 2024 marked the start of the hotel's massive facelift, and almost two years to the day we are finally decorating rooms ready to welcome our first guests next week!

It's amazing how Lionel and I think of our lives as before Richmond, and after the move Richmond... It was a huge turning point in our lives and we are forever grateful for what we have managed to achieve in this beautiful little town - even if we are still "inkommers".

Seven years... And so much has changed!

This area was a parking lot two years ago.

I'll never forget a guest pulling up at the old farm gate, obviously taking one look at the place and driving off after cancelling their booking.

I would have done the same, but so many guests took the chance and stayed with us, and absolutely loved it.

Back then, we didn't have huge budgets to be able to renovate or decorate the outside of this huge building and it was an eyesore!

Hopefully we have now been able to wave a magic wand and transform the old parking lot into somewhere a guest would love to be in.

We love our new garden area!

It was never going to be perfect...

The reclaimed parquet was totally uneven. It took three weeks to get it smooth with our big sanding machine. I really wanted the floors to be as smooth as glass, but it was never meant to be.

The original cement floors - originally covered with hideous blue "plak down" (glued) carpet tiles - have subtle undulations and every single wall is skew. Perfection was never possible, but I'm happy with it just being very good.

The upstairs wooden floors have also revealed their stunning colour.

I've never seen it before. When we moved in, in 2019, they were dry and worn. We didn't have money for sanding, so I spent many days and nights sealing the floors with an imbuia sealer... A decision I regretted when we started sanding.

But now the gorgeous Meranti shows off it's phenomenal natural colours.

Stay tuned for second and third coats going on this week!!

Much ❤️ from the Karoo!
