This Freedom Day, let’s reflect on and continue campaigning for the next frontier of our rights: The Right to Choose!
Our Long Walk Continues
Today, we celebrate a nation that chose a future defined by dignity, equality, and the protection of our most fundamental human rights. Our Constitution is admired worldwide for its commitment to self-determination. It promises every South African the right to live with dignity and the power to make choices about their own life and body.
But for those facing terminal illness and unbearable suffering, one essential freedom is still missing.
At DignitySA, we believe that freedom must include the right to choose how our story ends. Dignity is the right to a peaceful end when suffering becomes unbearable.
As we honour the heroes who won our liberation, we continue the work to ensure that our legal system reflects the compassion of our Constitution. This is why DignitySA has approached the High Court to ensure that "freedom for all" includes the right to a dignified end too.
